Cable or dsl? my dilemma!

Post by extort »

I've been a subscriber of Adelphia's cable internet service since july of 2000 and I was very happy with it until recently. I've noticed speeds drop especially durning evening "peak times". Where I live there is also an option of 768k vdsl. I was wondering if this would be better than what i've got now becuase it's around the same price. I'd also like everyone's opinion of what i should do. Thanks in advance
btw, here are the speedtest results for my current cable connection!

Test running..........
** Speed 424(down)/125(up) kbps **
(At least 8 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Thanks

If you are unhappy try the DSL for a little while. I was going to do that but after I got my service all hooked up the techs then found out I was 19,500 feet away from the Central Office (CO) and you need to be within 18,000 feet. So I had to cancel but even if I decided to try it I would get my money back within 30 days. See if your DSL provider will give you a 30 free trial that way you have nothing to lose if you like DSL but also make them do a test before hand to really see if you can even get the service.

As a side note I got a call from Verizon asking me if I'd like to sign up last night, this being a week after I cancelled the service because I was ultimately too far away from the CO.

Verizon: Would you like to try DSL?

Me: I did and I was too far away.

Verizon: Well you have to be within 18,000 feet.

Me: Well I'm 19,500 feet so what was the point of calling me? <click>.

DSL distance

So, with DSL........does it mean that the farther you are from the central office, the worse your speeds will be??

I called to investigate a while back, and they told me I was 16,200 feet away. It's under 18,000, but......

That's how DSL works. The nice thing is that that will be your speed preety much all of the time unlike cable which flucuates depending on netowrk congestion. While it will be a lot slower than your cable on its best day, if you'd rather have dependable speeds try the DSL. Wait for your telco to offer 30 days free so you can have both services at the same time to see which is better over a couple weeks time of use.
