USB vs PCI (Cont'd)

Post by Unregistered »

Okay, just an update on my situation:

For those of you who didn't read my last message, I was asking about PCI/USB relations as far as connectivity, speed, etc. And here's what I've been trying:

I tried removing the speed tweek, the ping didn't change, the transfer speed dropped nearly in half.

[On a friend's advice] I tried using the USB port instead of my NIC, my friend said his connection was faster when he used that instead, I figured it couldn't hurt. So last night I tried to plug it in, and no joke, sparks flew out of my cable modem (no joke either), when I plugged the cable into my computer, it made a deep electrical sound like electricity arcing, when I touched the other cable to my modem's port, electricity arced into the modem so I decided that wouldn't be such a good idea anymore.

^I have no f%$#ing clue why that happened, but it did^

So I checked the setting in the last message board in regards to setting my NIC to 10 base T 1/2. It didn't change anything (it was already automatic anyway).

I even updated the driver, I haven't tested it yet, but something tells me that won't help either.

As a last resort I did a full format. This hasn't helped either. The ping is just as bad, the packet loss is slightly worse.

So I'm, at this moment, calling my ISP and asking them who peed in their Wheaties...

Anyone else wanna throw their two cents in? Any suggestion would be nice

:) :( :) :( :) :( :) Mood Swings

If sparks are flying out of the cable modem then I think it's safe to say it needs to be replaced and is probably the cause of your problems.

Just to be clear. Did you connect the USB cable to the PC first or to the modem first? It reads like you heard arcing when you first plugged into the PC. If so, then the modem has nothing to do with it, as it wasn't hooked up to the modem at the time. In that case, you may have a short to the USB port on the PC.

Well, I don't remember... But, I remember hearing an odd noise when I plugged the USB cable into the computer first I apologize, but it wasn't "arcing", it sounded like a PC speaker (The little black kind that you usually see on some electronics) as if it were directly connected to an alternating current, making a strange screatching sound, it was muffled though and I couldn't hear it so well...

Which is odd, considering the fact that my computer was off, well, now that I think about it, not really, my PC doesn't actually turn "off", it just powers down to bare minimums...

Anyway, I should have unplugged it, but it doesn't matter because odds are had I actually plugged it in entirely it would have inflicted far greater damage than it did already...

On a lighter note, nothing was damaged, I simply decided not to even bother trying it...

As far as the cause, there's probably a short in my case, it wouldn't surprise me at all, as far as where - I have no idea...

I sort of found that out a long time ago when I put my grounding bracelet on to work on my PC, and I kept getting shocked in the wrist...

Well, anyway, the modem is unscathed, and works just as poorly as it did before, problem went on unsolved... I've called Cox and they're sending someone out to check it out...

I doubt it's the modem though, nothing's happened to it sinse I've had it... I mean, I cleaned it out real good when I spilt pop in it, I successfully found and glued all the pieces I broke off when I drop-kicked it across the living room, I think I correctly repaired the wired my cat chewed up, and I think the non-certified wall outlet I made out of tinderwood, glue, papermache and coathangers is working rather well (The fan solved the smoking problem I had earlier).

- Thanks for the rpely

Glad to be of assistance. You wouldn't believe the number of people that don't take these forums as seriously as you do. Is the cat OK?
