Scandisk Problem??

Post by Jin »

I need help with scandisk. When I go a try to do a scandisk and choose the thorough option. Everything looks ok but it will restart ten times before popup comes up telling me that some program is writing to the hard drive and that's why it restarted ten times. I checked the programs that were running by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and I closed all of the programs except Explorer and Systray. I restarted the scandisk and it still happened. Can someone explaing why?

There obviously is still something running in the background, but try this.....

Start your system up in the safe mode and run scandisk, if all runs well then you can try a program called "End it All". "End it All" may show some other hidden proggy that is running that Windows isn't.

"End it All" Link

DOS's Scandisk can sometimes do better . Invoke your Start-up menu
(Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup), choose Command prompt only (NOT
Safe mode Command prompt), then at the C: prompt , type Scandisk /all & press Enter .
When finished , type win & press Enter .
---------------------------
To see ALL that is running while in Windows do this:
1. Start scandisk and then PAUSE it.
2. Go to Start - Run - type MSINFO32
3. In the folder tree view click on Software Environment\Running Tasks

You may be surprised at what you find!

Try ScanDisk with the extra functions unchecked.
ScanDisk will tell you then, what is causing your problems.
USUALLY they are caused by filenames over 66 characters. It will tell you and the scan will stop,
I have been unable to scan for at least 4 months. Fireworks 4 has about 20 of these files that stall ScanDisk.

I've seen this b4....open Winamp goto Options...Preferences...Setup...Agent and Uncheck "Enable Winamp agent" close out Winamp, reboot and run Scandisk.

Shortcut for Scandisk that I use...
Start
Run...scandskw /a /n "Enter"
scandskw /a "all drives"
scandskw /n "no confirm"

if all goes well scandisk will Open...check your drive(s) and if no problems found close itself out.

I have 2 HDs I'm kinda lazy about going thru all the menus just to run Scandisk ;)
