I'm new to this,so don't laugh when I ask dumb questions
I've got a D-Links Di-704 router. I do a little online gaming. When I do I just put the router in DMZ mode on my pc. On my other pc ,that my kids are on,they can't download mp3,s.
I know there is a way to put in a specific address to open a port, but I don't know how to do this.
Can some one help..
And can I run my rig in DMZ mode with other running an open port?
They said there is no error messages . It just does'nt down load.
To tell ya the truth,I'm goen by what my kids told me.
But they are both computer smart.
I'll have to check it out myself.
I have the DI-704, and do alot of online gaming WITHOUT DMZ Enabled. Everything works just great almost out of the box. I did a little matchup for my network (Static IP, etc.), but other than that, my games work beautifully without DMZ, Virtual Server, or any of those other options enabled.
You may want to reset the router (the pin hole on the left of the front panel), and see how it works like that with your games. You never know, could do the trick.
You do not need to open any ports, or put any computer in the DMZ (meaning all ports open) to download files. I use WinMX home, at work, and NAT does not stop it. With NAT routers, and requests made from the LAN are let out the firewall fine.
Same with most games, if you play as a client, they work fine behind NAT. No configuration needed. Now some older games will not let multiple clients from behind the same router connect to the same server and play, they don't have support for multiple clients from the same IP (such as Quake 2), but newer games (such as Quake 3) are fine. And port forwarding/DMZ will not help that...still playing from behind the same WAN IP. Just about all newer games work fine from behind a router without any configuration, UT, HL, Rune, Q3, RTCW, etc. There are some games where to play on Microsofts Gaming Zone or similar which may require ports to be opened, I can't answer for those, I stick with more mainstream newer games.
You only need to forward ports if you are running a server, and wish to let "untrusted public" clients connect to your server. Or DMZ if you don't care about security and are too lazy to look up which ports your server needs.
