Printer sharing problems

Post by Astrotolus »

I am having some trouble sharing my printer over my home network. The last time I tried to print over the network, about three weeks ago, it worked fine but now when I try I get an error message saying the printer is out of paper or that the printer is not responding. I uninstalled it and tried to set it up again, but I can't remember how I did it last time. The printer is an HP Deskjet 695C.

Can anyone tell me the steps I need to follow to get it up again, or a site on the topic?

Thanks.

Its it on another machine or do you have it hooked to a Jet Direct box?

The printer itself is connected to another system on the network.

Does the printer work properly on the PC it's connected to? Test print work okay? Is the printer shared properly? What OS's you using? Using NetBEUI protocol? Anything new on your system?

Both systems are running Win98, and yes I am using NetBEUI. The printer works fine on the host system. If I use Add Printer and then select network printer, it askes me for drivers. Some I an find on the host systme but others are not there. I think I might have had the drivers installed on the second system before, but now if I install them I end up with two printer installed.

you need to tell the Printer Wizard what brand
and model of printer drivers you want to install
on the second networked PC

I can browse to the HP695C using W2000
You may need to use the 'have disk' option with W98

Ok, I went to the printer control panel, then Add Printer, then network printer, browsed to the printer but it tells me the printer is offline and that I can install it but can't use it until it comes back online. The host system and the printer are on.

What's up with this?

do you have the host PC turned on?
do you have the printer 'shared' on that PC?
can you find that printer from the client PC by
browsing to it via the Network Neighbourhood?

I installed the drivers on the client system, then after a reboot a message came up to I tested comm but it says two-way comm was working. Now I just went to Net Neighborhood, browsed to shared printerm clicked on it and it askes me if I wanted to set it up so I did, and I printed test page fine, but if I go to the printer control panel I have two of the same printer in there.

If I go to the print wizard (same thing as Printer Control panel, Add Printer right?) and then network printer, it tells me the printer is offline. If I choose to install anyway, it then asks for drivers, some of which I can find on the host machine in the c:\windows\system directory, but others are not on the host machine. If I just skip the file, at the end of the install it will tell me that there is a driver problem.

A I said before, if I install the drivers on the client, then go to Net Neighborhood and pick the printer I can "use existing driver" or "reinstall driver". If I use existing driver it will work, well at least I can print a test page, that's all I've tried so far, but there are two printers in the Printer control folder. I'm pretty sure I only had one in there before, but it looks like I might have to put up with that.

ignoring all the double printer monkey motion in the printer folder,
can you now print from both PC's?

Actually I think I have it set up like it was before. I just installed the drivers on the client, then in the Printer Control Panel I right-clicked on the printer icon, went to the Details tab and the using "capture printer port" I assigned LPT1 to the printer on the host system. Seems to working for now.

Is printer sharing in network neighborhood enabled and is the printer shared on host machine?

k, a lil' checklist u must check and complete!

*make sure the printers actually installed on ur server pc!
*go 2 'start - settings - control panel'
*Select 'Network'
*Check if the followin Protocols, clients etc' r present 'Client For microsoft netwurks' + ur NIC + 'TCP/IP ->' + 'NetBUEI' + and mainly of all, 'File and printer sharing for microsoft networks'!( i have toggled with the NetBUEI protocol, and found my network and internet runs fine w/out it, and i can still print ova netwurk, may-b b-coz i have a router?)

if all r present ur fine. then run the printer wizard and set it up ova the network as uthas have told u 2.

once dun, check if the printer is present in ur neighbourhood network. if so, test print a page from the server pc and the clients. if this duznt wurk seek further help, i shall look into it further 4 u, if u no successfull solution presents itself, im afraid the only thing i can reccommend is that u scrap ur network & printer drivers, and start from scratch in the correct order.
