two computers: 98se to 98se

Post by dzav1 »

I want to hook two computers together in my home (one upstairs and one downstairs)using one modem. I have been using a USB speedstream 4060 modem on one computer for about a year now without too many problems. Its time to try and connect two computers together. Someone gave me some NIC cards. Don't know the brand but they do say "16/4" on them. I do have some cat5 cable with RJ45 on them. Can I make this work? Simplicity?

Thanks

The cards you were given probably will not work to link your computers together and to your modem.

The 16/4 refers to a Token Ring card. Cable modems run on the Ethernet standard, not the Token Ring standard.

Check out http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ for lots of info on this subject. It will explain it visually as well as in text form which will be much easier to grasp if you are new to networking.

you need two standard NIC cards, which can be picked up for as cheap as 8 bucks at many local stores or online. beware, name brand stuff does normally improve performance a little

then if you want to hook up the two computers directly, you need a crossover cable, which is a CAT5 cable with cords 3 and 6 flipped.

if you wish to share files (which im sure you're going to do) make sure you have the comptuers in the same workgroup

if you wish to share internet, you will need to run an ICS program (internet connection sharing). I'm no expert on those...

If you only want to network the 2 PC's for file sharing,
you will need a switch, plus install the NETBEUI protocol.

If you wnat to access the NET with both PC's get a
4 port router instead. In this case, both PC's will need to
have a properly functioning network card, with the TCP/IP protocol installed.

On the puter with the internet connection install a second nic. And with a crossover cable hook it up to the second puter. Download AnalogX proxy (for free mind you), and presto all good to go.
