Blinking Activity light

Post by yearling »

I have a motorola modem sb4100. the question is this "why does my activity light keeps on blinking as if I am surfing the net?" The weird thing is that it keeps on blinking even if my PC is turned off. By the way I have a BEFW11S4 router. I am just wondering if this is normal or someone is trying to break in or something is wrong with my modem, etc. If anybody can explain this, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

It's a combination of four things:

Script kiddies "attacking" your machine. Not to worry so long as you are not running a server and do not have File and Print Sharing installed.

Probes from your ISP to see if you have any banned services installed such as a mail server.

ARP broadcasts, either legitimate or resulting from creatures such as Code Red.

Traffic associated with renewing the router's IP lease.

Most folks just turn the modem towards the wall.

thank you guys. At least I know that this is happening not just on my cable modem. I'll try your suggestions. Turn the modem towards the wall and get used to it. BTW, I have BlackIce installed in one PC and I'll try to install it in all the PC's I have (looks like the company will be after me now, huh). Thanks again.

Blackice sucks. To many false reports.
Try Zonealarm.
Get a good router.
As for the light, I never have that problem in Phoenix.
Did in Las Vegas and got use to it.

BlackIce came with Application CD from work. I'll try Zonealarm. As for the router, I'm stuck with it (monetary constraints). Anyway, I primarily use it for sharing Internet Access. Oh yeah, for security too. Thanks for the tip.

This directly from the Net Ops manager of my system.

They will not even accept a ZoneAlarm log as evidence of
abuse. I'm not sure WHAT firewall they will accpet.

My activity light does not flicker, but since I installed a router, the WAN activity light flickers the same way that the activity light on the SB4100 does.
