It now looks like Comcast is advertizing its cable modem service as 1.5mbit Downstream.I bet that after they bring their own network online we will all be limited to a D/l cap of 1.5mbit.. - Not good at all - same money - less service...

I suggest we all start complaining NOW before thay actually implement this...

I'm very sure complaining will do no good whatsoever.

For some reason, the providers seem to NOT be interested in what the users want. I work in a former AT&T @Home area that has become a Charter Pipeline area.

They have three packages:

256k down 64k up $30
768k down 128k up $40
1.5M down 256k up $80

$5 for modem
$5 for additional IP's

There used to be no cap on D/L and a 128K cap on upload for
$50 per month. No amount of complaints have seemed to change this. Maybe nobody in the Data over Cable industry monitors sites like this, because if they did, they would find out that folks are not happy at all about download caps. I really don't think @home's problems came from NOT having d/l caps, so I think that they should make a capped service available to customers who wish to have the service, but can't afford the $50 bucks / month, but have a package priced more reasonably than $80 and make it uncapped.

That is going to suck considering that I will be swithching to comcasts new network on the 29th of this month.
But we have WOW in our area that is going to be providing internet through the recently purchased ameritech system that in my area is no older than 5 years. I hear that they are offering up to 10mbps. Actually they offer three packages, 256,3mbps,10mbps. check it out at http://www.wideopenwest.com

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the 10 mbit service by WOW is only offered in a very limited area of Colorado. The eastern properties they bought from Ameritech, they were called Americast. They've announced that they will introduce cable modems in the spring, but don't expect them to offer more than their competitors do - they still have the same cable modem system limitations.

Both Time Warner and Americast/WOW cable are available at my house, bu the WOW is cable only.

WOW is cable for now, but they will be rolling there internet service very soon. And yes they will offer up to 10mbps. They have three diffrent packages. This info I am getting is not from a internet site but right from the horses mouth. Our company is already doing cable installs for them with plans on internet beginning early next year!

And btw, the Americast systems are like only five years old and comcast is going on like 25-30 years old. There system is old and out of date. Cant see WOW not picking up the pace on the speed. Not trying to argue but I do disagree with you.

I'm not clear on what you are saying. Are they overbuilding the cable system with fiber to offer the Airswitch Ethernet product? In Columbus, they have said that they are installing cable modems.

I don't believe that 10 mbits is truly possible over cable. Moreover, in the present regulatory environment where a calbe company must deliver basic cable service using unencripted analog, I can't imagine where the cable channels for the downstream bandwidth would come from.

When Americast built there system they put up alot of extra fiber because they were planning ahead. They new that they were not going to just offer cable tv on there system, but they needed the time to get things set up. Now the time has come so we need to sit back and check out the real deal.
I know when its available to me I will be there first in line. And I do beleive we can hit 10mbps on cable.

I sure hope you are right.

One thing I've never done is walk the Americast system. Time Warner takes their fibers from the nodes back to 18 buildings around town where the CMTS and cable gear are located. From there it goes back to a master headend. I've never noticed any Americast buildings. If the rain ever stops I will walk the cable and see what I find.

I noticed the same thing soon around the same time as the @Home bankruptcy ruling. I had only been online for a few weeks when my d/l cap went from 2.5 to 1.5. Still not bad, as it HAS been consistent, but I'm not crazy about it.

Regarding a price drop; don't look for it. Cable companies are looking at their "better" product and in most cases since they're cheaper than that other high-speed service, they'll stay where they are, or progressively increase. Remember, this whole ISP thing is viewed as a necessary evil. They'd prefer to just screw around with an easily managed and staffed video service.
As far as more upstream due to less downstream, nope. One doesn't affect the other.

Dude I've had Comcast@home for about 2 years now, @home's speed was "supposed" to be 1.5down/128kb up yet i've been able to pull speeds down around 3mb/300kb up.

In other words, posted caps don't mean nothing until you actually have the proof its true...........

I hate to start up crap, but yall complaining about paying $39.99 for a 1.5 cap? Just be glad that you're not losing your cable all together! I just came from Verizon DSL to Comcast and I love it!

Hell, if you dont like a 1.5 DL cap, go get DSL (ooops, thats if you can get it outside of the telco's) and pay $49.99 for 768/128 (umm... half the speed) and get to complain about...

I used to work for Comcast@home. I was on the desk for level 2 support.

And i will verify that no amounts of complaining will do any good....

What they will do is let thier level one support take care of all complaints and they will tell you that if you want more band you will have to pay.

$80 bucks for what! here in toronto you might as well spend $160 for a full out ADSL....

I've been on the Comcast network for about two weeks now. It sucks!! It all started out fine and all...stayed the same as @Home. Then they must have implemented their "Comcast managing" or whatever it is they call screwing their customers. I've dropped to below 1.5 Mb and am lucky if I get transfers above 70 KB/s. Now let's see 1.5 Mb yields a transfer of 187.5 KB/s, where the hell do they give me 70 from??
I'm not bitching as much about the drop as I am about the fact that they have the balls to cap the speeds, but they won't actually tell you that they're doing it. I've asked the question straight out and the only negligible answer I got was..."We don't have that information available"
I want my @Home back!

They also have two new services providing service which is www.ultraband.com and www.switchpoint.com. You should watch the switchpoint video. I want it so bad i think. I talked to someone in Utah that had Switchpoint in the beta stages and said it was $40 to $60 a month. How much does WOW cost btw for the 3 Mbps up and down ? Also how much does it cost for the 10 Mbps up and down too? Hope WOW or amy of the other new better high speed interent services do not go down. I think they will attract a lot of customers if their prices are right around cable and dsl because we are all willing to pay about the same monthly charge for faster download speed and upload speed. Plus maybe even ok tech support. But thats a huge maybe. I am my own tech support now a days.
