Pc Freezes when downloading at highspeed

Post by Erich_ »

I just got cable and when i download really fast from a good server at around 230kb/s it freezes totally after about 2 minutes.
COuld i have faulty ram or something? I can play counter-strike for long periods and no probs at all! I can download at 40kb/s for a 100mb files and no problems! I have a sb4100 motorola cable modem and at&t broadband service.Connects through NIC card.Zonet card. This totally sux0rz! Help me pls and i will reward you :) . I'm thinking windows is messed up (win98 btw) and gonna format c: then reinstall. But if i do this will it affect my connection with at&t? Will it still connect? I'm new at this stuff.
Thanks for your time, I appreciate it ;-)

Welcome to Speed Guide

Usally the cause of a PC freezing when d/ling with a ethernet connection is the NIC card, either the drivers or it's sharing a IRQ and is having problems sharing it. If your going to format anyway go through the process and if you continue to have the freezing problem try setting up your NIC card on it's own IRQ.

As far as formating and getting connected back to AT&T is no hassel. Make sure you have your mail server information i.e. pop & smtp server addresses and your username and password for your email.

Good luck

Can I ask how that is relevant, despite the fact that he stated that he plays Counter-strike as an example?

Don't know if this will help, but as a certified DSL tech, I can tell you DSL & DELL do not mix very well..could be the same with cable since they basically set up the same way...that's if you have a Dell of course :)
Just another tech trying to earn a buck.
