I think it would be a great Idea for a guide, as your talking about.
Now, whether to make it a series or a all in one thing is something to consider, that I don't have an answer for. Somethings do need to be archived, but I'm finding that alot of people don't know how to navigate the main server for the archives.
Philip needs to do something about the search feature on subjects. Just about everything that I've tried is difficult to locate and I can only imagine the look on a newbies face when they try it! I think this is why we have tons of repeat questions or topics. It's not just a problem in the security forum, but the others as well.
Ken, I'm not much help on this subject. I rely pretty heavily on your opinions, as you once had just about everything imaginable to work with and tons of information at your finger tips.
I think we should leave the subjects at the top alone. If it takes 10 or 15 sticky's to address some important topics, then so be it.
Everybody that is great in the security area is for the most part sharing their knowledge of new products or interesting sites that might perk someone up to go check into. Just like the Outpost 1.0 deal today! greEd is going to some length to test this thing and is letting us now what he has found. If something should pop up that is worthy of it's due attention, then maybe sticky or archive it.

Anybody else care to add your comments?

Maybe you should have a Sticky on "BIOS Flashing gone bad" :D
J/K I know it's not funny, but if you can't laugh at this stuff, it'll eat you alive, right?

With computer/Net security being a huge issue anymore these days, I think that organizing things would be a great idea, Ken. It would make for easy reference for newbies and the experienced alike. There are so, so many issues in security that it cannot be covered in just a few paragraphs and I find myself surfing all over checking out the latest news and such, though most of it does appear here very quickly, it'd still be nice to have a link to click on here at SG for the latest news, hints and tips and such.

Ken, Why not just use a link that can be clicked if and when the info is needed. Not original, I know but that works elswhere. ;)

Only needs a one word link.

I agree with posting a sticky topic at the top of the forum but inside the "sticky" should be a layout with all the basics, intermediate, and advanced topics of networking security. You could have a layout something like this:

Personal Computer Security:
{Description} - link to information

Network Computer Security:
{Description} - link to information

Virii Alerts:
{Description} - link to information

Etc, Etc, Etc

Baically laying out a single page with informatio that can be accessed and referred to as needed in the forum. This would also making updating the information and links alot easier to manage.

just my $.02

A somewhat newbie weighs in.....

Post by theINSPECTOR »

A general guide geared towards newbies is just what the doctor ordered. I'll echo the consensus about a page separated into various topical and technical links. I, too, find myself doing lengthy search sessions to find the specific topic I need info on.......(And I usually find it here). Good idea........

updated links would be good

Post by denolth2 »

I think it's a great idea....but the links should be updated fairly frequently.....when I went through that long list you had a while ago, Ken, I found many outdated or no longer relevant to the topic...don't remember which ones they were anymore, but I'm sure you've had that experience, too.

But it would also be good to have folks input their own sources and finds as time goes on, too. just my two bits....

No matter how it's organized, the cool thing about something like this is that we'll all know that the information and the links have been verified, tested and are valid. We can also provide reviews of test sites, etc. so people can pick and choose which one(s) they wish to use without feeling like the guinea pig.

As a new want to be solver of my own problems. I think the idea is great.

I have gotten some great information from other posted threads and the ones I post myself.

You have a lot of patient and helful more advanced users on here that are more than willing to answere my sometimes (mostly)stupid questions.LOL

Never the less, very helpful. Good Luck! I'll be watching for your decision.

Thanks G

I think it a excellent idea!

I know I'm not the only one that could use these types of threads or even tutorials/info pages. The fav sites and program suggestion is also a good idea. It could save people alot of time reposting the same topics over and over. (eg. whats a good firewall?) I think it will be great for newbies and the more seasoned techs.

I do think some time should be taken to decide how it should be presented. To make it easy to find just what you're looking for when you're in a hurry. (see Greed's post) But from what I have seen SG is pretty good at that already.

Bottom line: great idea(s)... all of them. I'm sure if help is needed there are many of us who will be happy to contribute. (whatever little info I know is all yours)

TOPICS ABOUT SECURITY HOLES?

Post by archimon »

I am definitely a newbie in networking and I Just got my net work with the help from u guys!

Yet in most of the time I just got the solutions without knowing the logic behind, and it's like finding a needle in the sea from searching the links provided here.

The first thing I want to know is the possible securities holes in a system.(from software to hardware)
Do you mind putting it in a flow chart, showing the possible path that the hacker can go through? LIke usually what will be his first attempt and if he cannot go through what will he do next..etc..
and in those nodes,or the attackable holes, can you reference or link it to a paragraph that explain how it works and how we can fill the holes?

THank you!

Everyone here pretty much said what I was gonna suggest... there's just more one thing that I think is very important: DON'T REFER TO CRACKERS/SCRIPTKIDDIES AS "HACKERS"!!!

I get pissed off enough when I see this on television... especially when it happens on TechTV, those people should know better. You are obviously someone who knows the difference between the two, don't make the mistake of following the trend of insulting the very people who basically INVENTED the Internet along with all the software you own by misusing the word "Hacker".

Sorry if that sounded harsh, but it's been a pet peeve of mine for a LONG time.

heya ken,

(It's 4oh4. The excite email addy I regged that name with is ****ed up due to excite changing ownership and all. Is there any way that you could maybe fix that for me? The next time I see you on icq I'll give you all the info to prove that it was me and I'm not trying to steal someone else's account.....even though I've never seen anyone else use that nick. ;) )

But back to the topic at hand.... There have been some good ideas brought up, and I just wanted to let you know that you're more than welcome to use that sub7 manual removal tut that I did for FunK's site (RIP). Although if there's a reference to "hackers" in it you might want to edit that out. I'd hate to piss off I.D.!

edited to say that I can't believe that "d i c k" is filtered and if there's anything that I can do to help let me know ken.

I agree with the links to dedicated sections for help. I am one of the newest of newbies to SG. When I come in, I generally know what I am looking for, so, when I first visited it was a little confusing muddling through all the posts looking for a subject that might help me.
