Network Working - NOT!!??

Post by drhenn »

Hello All,

A newbie requires help?

I have just put together a 2 PC Network of Desktop & Laptop.
All config appears to be correct, Unique Names, Same Group.
I have TCP/IP configured & Bound -> File & Print Sharing enabled.
Pings work To & From each PC O.K.
Net Diag works from Both PC O.K

I have shared out 2 directory's on each PC.

Here's what happens:

On the "Desktop" Network Neighborhood..
I see just my Laptop Icon,, NO Desktop icon,
I can double click the Laptop Icon and see my shares. ALL O.K

On the "Laptop" Network Neighborhood..
I see just my Laptop icon, NO Desktop icon.

If on the Laptop I do "Find Computer" Desktop.
It finds It, With Correct Location "HomeNet"
I can double click it I can see my shares. ALL O.K

ALSO if on the Desktop I do "Find Computer" Laptop,
It still finds It, BUT the Location is NETWORK, NOT "HomeNet"

I know it appears to be file sharing, and working,
BUT it's not right.

Any help much appreciated.

Change the CAT5 cable w/a known good one. If that doesn't help, try dumping the network stack on the desktop PC, reboot and let it reinstall the NIC, TCP/IP & Client.
And by the way, welcome to SpeedGuide. We'll get you figured out.

I had a similar problem.

When you share your drive or folders, be sure to rename the shared name. By default, I think Windows uses a hidden name so you can't see the drive/folder in NN.

Hello All,

Thanks for the advise..
After reading more on Browse Master,
I decided to make the Destop the Browse Master, LapTop disabled. Well that didn't work. So I put them both back to Auto.

Then ReBooted, Guess What, I now see both PC's, on Both PC's.
I suppose it will be interesting to see what happens next time I
ReBoot.

Many Thanks - David
