help with small home network

Post by Rings890 »

My plan is to have two NIC cards in my main machine and run a crossover cable to the second smaller/older machine.
Now the part that I am not sure about is what do I do for an IP address for the second machine on the end of the crossover cable?
I am on a DSL connection if that makes a differance, it also only gives me one IP address and it is a Dynamic address.

Same IP will cause a conflict. Do you plan to have www access on both machines? If not, the install NetNEUI on both NICs on the crossover and they'll share files using that protocol, while the main machine will use TCP/IP for the net NIC. Be sure to bind file & print sharing only to NetBEUI.

Actually, it's soooo easy (once you know what to do of course). I see that you're running Win2k. All you need to do is go into the network control panel, right-click the connection to the internet, chose properties, go to the sharing tab and enable the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). You can now configure the client (the other PC) for DHCP, and it will all run very smooth :) . Gotta love Win2k for that!

What that'll do is enabling network address translation (NAT) on your main PC. It will use only one IP to access the internet, while the other IP is local. If you access the web from the client computer, your server reroutes the packets accordingly. Oh, and don't forget to disable File & Print Sharing in the properties of the internet NIC in your server!!!

Cheers,

Buy a cable DSL router\switch ex LinkSys 4 port. Easier to configure.

Nope. Just have to set the NICs on both systems to "obtain IP address auto" and let the router do all the work (running DHCP). For more info see -
