About to go cable...is USB okay?

Post by dial_up_dude »

Hi all.

I've finally made the decision to go cable. I'm glad I stumbled upon this site--it Rocks!

I'm probably going to buy a Motorola SB4100 modem, but I'm a little hesitant about the USB connection.

I'm running W95 and have a scanner and printer on the Modo USB ports now. I'll have to install a PCI card to get another USB port for the cable modem.

Are you experienced users okay with USB for cable access? Is Ethernet better for speed & stability--or am I just old fashioned?

Thanks!

NIC NIC NIC! ;) (Sounds like a scene from a Month Python movie eh?) Please don't use the USB ports to emulate a NIC card. There are many problems ahead for you if you do.

go with an ethernet based modem so that you can leave yourself open to network additional pc's if you so decide to at a future date

Exactly! And you can add a router for multiple-PC access and an awesome LAN. USB is excellent for cameras, printers, ZIP drives and stuff like that, but it sucks for Ethernet emulation.

Thanks for the quick replies.

So, I shouldn't buy a SB4100? I was under the assumption it only offered a USB conncetion.

Ahh...I looked at the online owner's manual. It has an ethernet port.

Silly me.

I had no choice myself to use a USB for my connection.. and I also use a Motorola surfboard.. I haven't had any problems with it and I've had cable for almost 2 years.

If I had the choice, and I will very soon (new pc on the way... w00t w00t) I would prefer to connect via nic card

Good luck dial_up_dude

sb4100 has USB and ethernet. Get it, it is a good deal. If u ever plan to upgrade or use a labtop etc u r all set. Get the NIC not the USB if u can, but USB is ok for perisodic usage etc.

I use USB port simply because I can't seem to get this Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Hub to work. When I plug in ethernet cord, no activity lights come on. It's not the Hub. Dunno what else it is... 3rd Hub, same result.
