anyone can solve the problem?

Post by scyther »

I use RR cable service..........feel it really SLOW~~~ and i have to set a really SAMLL RWIN value...or im gonna loss some packet....
TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 42340
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 42340
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1693.6 kbps (211.7 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 677.44 kbps (84.68 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 27 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

i tested on dslreports.com, and it's 1846/375.... i saw someone who is using OOL cable service, they got 8XXX/5XX...how come???? what should i do to make my cable faster?
any ideas?
win98se, patches installed, winstock2.0 installed.
please help me~

You're maxing your rated connection speed. RoadRunner has a max speed of 2mbit/384Kbits.

Windows Socket 2 update Windows 95 - It contains some bug fixes from earlier implementations and includes performance enhancements, such as TCP large windows and time stamps support.

Why is this installed, it's for Win 95 not 98 :)

Try this below, it will clean out old patches in your registry:

Click on help thread below in signature and follow directions exactly, please leave your OS and system specs if you have not done so.Also if you have Cablenuts adjuster installed I need to know that. There are some Tips and how to do speed test on help thread. Thank you and good luck. Please do this AFTER you install patches:

Please click in my signature where it says Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.

thx dude, the patches from this site are not good for me... the RWIN value is too large, i got data lost, so i changed to a smaller value, and tested on dslreports.com, no data packet loss..
i have cablenut. i didn't install winstock2.0(my bad, sorry)

Cablevision is another sub-contractor like Comcast, Cox, Adelphia, Charter, etc. Cablevision runs OOL, and if you can get OOL, I'd get it in a hearbeat.

BTW, your connection is fine. Like I always say, if it isnt broke, dont fix it ! :)

Is this good?

TCP properties for IP = 65.xxx.xxx.xxx ()
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 373360

Unscaled Receive Window = 46670
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

and what do these numbers mean?

To answer some questions:

As long as you get good speeds and are getting stable downloads, your settings are fine. We cant decide whats best for you, only YOU can :)

If going with a high ReceiveWindow makes you go faster, then keep raising it. You are only limited by your connection, not your CPU or anything else.

Usually, the higher you go, the more speed. Sometimes if you go too high, and your connection will loose packets, and you need to bring it down. Thats why I say, every connection is different. One RWIN wont work for everyone. Experimenting is the best advice I can give you. :)

Its funny, OOL users, which is a GREAT and fast ISP, get 8mbps and use an RWIN of 64240. Most of their speed testing is inside the network and very close sites, in which a low RWIN wont slow them down.

But an rwin isnt random numbers right?
Theres a way o com up with a bigger rwin that is correct.
IS there like a formula or something for coming up with rwin's?

Nope, not random numbers. Although random numbers work, you wont get maximum efficiency. Its a multiple of your MSS. Typical MSS is 1460. :)

One more question. Where would I be able to test my packet loss? A specific web site maybe?

DSLreports.com has a good test. Or use a trace route, using "tracert theIP/site" in a dos prompt.
