XP firewall...

Post by Hank223 »

I went from a WIN98SE running Zonealarm to XP Pro. I noticed XP has a built in firewall. Anyone know if its anygood? Or should I get a3rd party firewall? Im definitly going to miss Zonealarms ability to allow certain programs internet access. Thanks.

The firewall with XP monitors information that is going out of your computer and not what is coming like, viruses, trojans, while in the administrator mode. For that reason, I would disable the firewall with XP and use ZoneAlarm or Tiny Firewall.

Please don't take this personally, but you are completely wrong with the above statement. First of all, ICF (XP's firewall) only monitors inbound traffic, and does not have any outbound capabilities. Secondly, no software firewall that im aware of has any capabilities to detect trojans/viruses. Plus, that is not the purpose of a firewall. Some hardware firewalls/routers do have the capability for virus detection i.e. SonicWall. Lastly, I too would disable XP's firewall for it is cumbersome and time consuming to use. Also, I would recommend the two firewalls that Magnum58 mentioned.

Roody,
I'm pretty sure (not positive) that the firewall is only available for the Professional Version of XP. Either way, to disable the firewall go to the desktop > right click, properties of "My Network Places" > right click, properties of "Local Area Connection" > "Advanced" tab > click the checkbox and use the settings button at the bottom to configure the firewall. Hope that helped..

yeah i found out where to disable it. for those who may be interested in knowing though. I ran the Shields Up test on XP's firewall prior to disabling it and it passed with flying colors. It listed me as stealth.

Marine06,

I read in PC Magazine that Zone Alarm will protect you against trojans. Yes, the Microsoft XP firewall does put you in the stealth mode. Wth the microsoft XP firewall enabled in the Administator mode someone can send you a trojan. In the Limited mode with the Microsoft XP firewall, XP will reject the trojan. But, in the limited mode some features that you may want to perform in Windows will be disabled.

Magnum58,
Zonealarm can stop exe, vbs, bat, etc files from emails hence the MailSafe option. HOwever, it does not detect them but rather blocks all exe files whethere malicious or harmless.
