Optimun Online and LinkSys Router
I have Optimum Online Cable on my main computer and I have the LinkSys router to share the cable onto my other computer. Everything is hooked up correctly. When I don't use the router, the cable works on my main computer, but when I plug into the router, nothing works at all. It must be a configuration problem in the router. I called Optimum Online but I can't get through to them. Help!

I have been using the LinkSys with OOL since January without trouble. Your settings should be:
Setup Tab:
Verify your LAN IP address & Computer on same segment (or turn on DHCP on the DHCP tab and enable DHCP on your computer)
Obtain IP Address Automatically
Login: Disabled
Then go to the Status tab and do a DHCP release and Renew. Verify that you are receiving a WAN IP address. OOL segments are usually in the 24.190.x.x range, others may indicate your not communicating properly with OOL.

didn't work!
Hmm I tried your configuration settings and it didn't seem to work. I wasn't clear on the second step in your instructions, though... you said to "Go to the Status tab and do a DHCP release and Renew. Verify that you are receiving a WAN IP address. " Nowhere in the Status tab does it allow me to "do a DHCP release and renew"... however, maybe you meant to do it in the WinIPCFG, which I have done, and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Also, when I go into the Status tab, after I released and renewed everything, shouldn't the WAN info be in there? Instead it just shows all 0's for everything, even though I pressed the Obtain IP Address Automatically. I know the IP that OOL has assigned to my computer, shouldn't I just fill it in? I just don't know what to put for the DNS Servers... help!

Are you certain you are cabled properly? It sounds like your not communicating with your modem at all.

Yeah, but you might not have the cable modem going to the WAN link on the router. Then you would have a situation like you describe.

Bkuhl if you're there... Maybe it has something to do with the Network TCP/IP properties? In Control Panel, Network, TCP/IP Properties, can you tell me what info to put? Do I put anything for Gateway, DNS, etc? I need to find out what's wrong with this! If anyone could please help me out it would be a great help! I'm sure someone else out there is using Optimum Online with a LinkSys router!

In Control Panel, Networking, Properties find Internet Protocol and hit Properties again. Verify that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected. This should allow you to get you address from the router. Also, from your workstation, attempt to ping 192.168.1.1, which is the default address of the router unless you have changed it.
Although, I don't think this is the problem because you are communicating with the router. You stated above that you were able to check the login and status pages. You problem is between the LinkSys and the cable modem.

You need to place your settings that OOL gave you into the router settings. Computername, and also maybe DNS settings. Then when you have your computers hooked up to your router get to a dos prompt and type winipcfg and release and renew your ip from the pc. Then verify that your pc ip address is a valid ip given out by the router like 192.168.1.3.
But just make sure that you configure your router correctly 1st.
Bkuhl seems correct that it seems that your router is not setup correctly with the right parameters. I am not sure of the specifics for OOL because I have @home ( you are lucky to have OOL !!!!) and @home I just needed to place my computer name into the router and set it to use DHCP.
Good luck

OOL does not require you to enter your host name or any specific information. If you have the router properly set up to receive DHCP information from the cable modem, you will receive the DNS and other settings directly from them. If you then have you local PCs set for DHCP, the information will trickle down to them with no manual intervention.Originally posted by hoov

I am going to recommend you take screen shots of you configuration pages and mail them to me. Bring up your web browser and connect to the LinkSys. Use ALT-Print SCRN to capture the browser screen and paste it into Pain Brush (pbrush.exe), then save the file out from there. Do this on the Setup, Status, DHCP, Security, and Advanced - Filters, Advanced - Forwarding, Advanced - Mac Addr. Clone. Also, right click on My Network Places and right click on you NIC card and select Properties. From there highlight Internet Protocol and select Properties and take a screenshot of the General tab. Please ZIP them before sending them through. If you do this, I can see EXACTLY where you are making a mistake.
My e-mail is in my .sig and my ICQ number is 5841765 (also in my profile). You can contact me either way and we will get you up and running......

No there is not. @Home and Road Runner use that but OOL does not require it.

Good, glad you got it working. Surprised the firmware was part of your problems. The older firmware, while buggy, had nothing that I remember impacting OOL.
Now on to tweaking the connection. That should keep you busy for a short while......
