2 PC's 1 @home modem

Post by gewa »

Can somebody help me with this please.

I want to connect 2 pc's running win 98 to a one @home modem.
I don't want to use router/hub.

Is there any way to do that.I want them to share files and internet connection.

Thanks

Alex!!

Buy a router you cheapskate!

And from reading your post it looks as though your going to have to pony up another $80 x 2 for a couple of NIC's for the towers, and about $110.00 for a PCMCIA NIC....take the plunge! Why make it so complicated? it will be the best money you've ever spent!

Or if your a real skinflint buy a hub and use ICS...good luck.

Since you wanna save some cash, throw a second NIC in one machine and run ICS on that machine. Only downside to that config is that the machine with the 2 NIC's has to be on in order for the client PC to get on the web.

I've done the piggy back connection. It sucks! For 87 dollars including tax, I got a Linksys 4 port router. It took a whole 5 minutes to get both computers connected to the internet. I also use @home. Go spend the money....it's worth it!

G'day Guys,

Can you say everything you just said - but in Lamens terms.

I have just picked up cable internet down here in Aus - I have 2 network cards, 2 pcs, plus cable modem. Is it a simple case of installing the 2 cards and sharing the modem?

Or am I missing something, and it is much more complex.

Thanx

Trav.

Sharing

Spend the money, get a netgear 4 port router. Very easy setup.
Reason, you have the capability to share files between the two systems and others without sight to others online. Without one, your open to everybody for the most part. You could link the two together with a crossover cable and engage ICS. or buy a 4 port swith (linksys) and then install a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm or TinyFirewall (they usually slow the system and are a pain) Remember. you get what you pay for!!! Best option is the router!!!!

Well, without buying a router/hub/switch, you need to buy one more NIC. Put two NICs in one computer, and one in the other. In the one with two NICs, you'll have to install routing software (also called internet connection sharing, or ICS). Then you hook the modem to the computer with two NICs, and hook the two computers together with a crossover cable. You'll probably want to install a firewall too, either a software one on the comp with two NICs, or a hardware one between the modem and the first comp. And, as was pointed out, in order to use the internet on the comp with one NIC, you'll have to have the other one on.

By the time you've sprung for another NIC, bought or downloaded some ICS software, and bought or downloaded a firewall, set everything up, and have everything configured so it works, you'll probably have invested enough time and money that it would've been worth it to just buy a router with a built in hub or switch (switch preferably). Plus, the way above is only good for connecting two computers really. If you want to be able to expand your network in the future, it'd be better to just get the router from the start.
It's better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
