Ok... I'm running on WinME, 128MegRAM, NVIDIA TNT2 vid card, 8GigHD, internet Sympatico.ca DSL external modem running on RASPPPoE connection. need more info let me know.

Here is my results after I made some changes to my registry. Sorry I don't have my previous results showing the 1500MTU size because I just registered to make this post and I have already made the changes to my reg, I'm not about to go back and show you. :(

----
TCP options string = 020405ac010303010101080a000000000000000001010402

MTU = 1492
MTU seems to be optimized for PPPoE... If you are not on a PPPoE connection, consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1440, which is less than MSS because of Timestamps, or other TCP/IP options used.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE. If you are not on a PPPoE connection, consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 114 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
----

B4, MTU and MSS was all wrong and showed up just like everybody else is getting even though my settings are not set to that. Soooo... I go into my registry and search through the NetTrans and found that there were some Protocals that had NO Description Labals in them. And the Values, etc. were empty. I figure these are safe to delete, so I do (after exporting my Reg of course).

I find also 2 copies of Nwlink.vxd and Netbeui.vxd now I'm not certain EXACTLY which one of these you should Delete if you find two or more. For me, I personally have nothing but 1 NIC in my puter, and have followed the RASPPPoE instructions to the T. So I don't have TCT/IP connected to my NIC. It is only connected to the DialupAdapter as RASPPPoE should be installed. I hope this information helps you in deciding which uh... Invalid entries in your Reg you need to Delete in the NetTrans section.

In any case, for the technically inclined... follow me here. Previously I used a 56k Modem. Ok, so there is gona be stuff entered in the Registry for using modem. Now that I have switched over to HighSpeed, I remove my modem and set up the HighSpeed with RASPPPoE. RasPPPoE is gona enter more registry stuff too... right!!?? Now back to the Duplicate entries in the Reg. I think it's a safe bet to say that the first Duplicate *.vxd reg entries I found are from back when I installed the 56K modem. It should be safe to delete all the previous Duplicates.

For example I have Netrans 0001 to 0017. Ok, my 0010 & 0011 is the first occurance of the nwlink.vxd & netbeui.vxd so I deleted them. They are gone right now! Sorry this is a big post. I'm not good at the direct root and this lengthly example might provide some good results for others. Now, also there were Netrans entries that had nothing in them except for MaxMTU and MSS. They look like they are doing nothing. So I deleted them too. Now you have seen my results above. It is reporting the RIGHT things now that I have fixed my Reg.

The point is if you know what you are doing with your Registry and you have some skill Get in there and RIP out the Junk.

I just made some quick changes and stuff so my tcp/ip tweak results above are not up to par. And I will post another results page soon when I have my Optimum settings in.

The best I can do

Post by TradeMark245 »

I have always used another website for doing all my tweaks. DSLReports is pretty good. But now you guys have more cool things and well you are just different. They offer other things you don't and vice versa. So I'll be coming by here more often now.

Well, I have done the best I can and have added and extra 200k to my download speeds from reading the stuff on this site and a little bit of RegCleaning

Here is my best results from the tcp/ip tester.

Looks good right? Send me some suggestions anyway.

Oh... here are some intresting results from DSLReports Speed Test Java program in Verbos:
Test running..Downloaded 60900bytes in 1480ms
Downloaded 696000bytes in 6970ms
First guess is 798kbps
medium speed line - now test 1mb
Downloaded 1109250bytes in 10930ms
Upload got ok 1 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 1bytes in 390ms
Upload got ok 1 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 1bytes in 380ms
Upload got ok 1 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 1bytes in 330ms
Upload got ok 50000 bytes uploaded
Uploaded 50000bytes in 4290ms

** Speed 811(down)/102(up) kbps **
(At least 16 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.
----

B4 I only say speeds of 500-600(down) 30-40(up). All that has changed now that I have come to this site and read posts from users having problems decided to clean out my reg of un-needed Dups and Wammo!! +200k to my D/L speeds... thanks!

IPMTU registry setting

Post by TradeMark245 »

Oh yeah, forgot to mention this change that I also made to my reg. I'm trying to be thorough here as there seems to be alot of people getting 1500MTU when it's not set to that.

Look at this Key in your registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\0001\Ndi\params\IPMTU

Mine previously looked like this:
(Default Value): 1492
default: 0
ParamDesc: IP Packet Size
type: enum

The valid enums are listed in the Sub Key enum.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\0001\Ndi\params\IPMTU\enum

It looks like this:
(Default Value): value not set
0: Automatic
1000: Medium
1492: PPP over Ethernet
1500: Large
576: Small

So in the IPMTU section you see it was set to an enum of 0 and 0 = default. Well I don't want to realy on Defaults so I changed it to 1496. Now it looks like this:

(Default Value): 1492
default: 1492
ParamDesc: IP Packet Size
type: enum

I think this is the culprit for the Wrong MTU sizes showing up in TCP/IP Tester. It seems that some have theirs set to 576 possibly from an OLD modem or what have you. And some are still on Default like I was which shows up as 1500.

I hope all this helps. I'll check back here tomorrow and see if I got replies. Remember always backup your Reg before editing & if you don't know how to change your registry don't take my word for it, ASK someone who knows!
