IP address problem on client box

Post by SteveGr »

We have 98SE machines that all seem to look and get an IP address f/ our new Win2k pro machine (has 192.168.0.1 assigned to the LAN nic - this machine has a 2nd nic for our DSL (PPPoe) modem - and all of the 98SE machines are ic sharing fine) ... except one of the 98SE clients assigns itself a 169.xxx.xxx.xx number. The release button does nothing and if you hit the renew button it says " DHCP server unavailable - renewing adapter." I tried removing and reinstalling TCP/IP (even with a safe mode restart, renaming drvdata.bin and drvidx.bin files and rebuilding the drivers) and end up in the same boat. Any ideas?

how many machines are trying to get an IP from the Win2K machine? 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is an internal IP assigned if it isn't getting one via DHCP. Someone correct me if i am wrong but can Win2K only support 10 connections?

Nine 98SE machines are getting addresses from the Win2k machine. I tried loggin the problem one on first today ... no luck ... still getting the 169.xx.xxx.xx address. The TCP/IP configuration seems to be exactly the same on this machine as the others that are getting 192.168.0.x addresses fine. The problem machine also gets on the network fine but I find I cannot ping the DHCP address. It does a loopback ping ok.
Any ideas? Help is appreciated!
