I think you will be hardpressed finding a difinitive answer to this question.
What is best is in the eyes of the beholder. What is great to me may be a nightmare to someone else.
From what reading there is around if you want to use a DOS AV program then try F-Prot. It is also available in Windows format. Careful with the DOS one though, it doesn't act as a "realtime scanner". Only works when you want it to.

I am using AVG at the moment and have for quite a while. Caught all that has been thrown at it including test files other than Eicar. The fact it is free has little bearing on my using it. I just think it's a good/great AV program. No-one has proven otherwise, yet.

We just recently bought Norton 2001, after being infected by a virus. Our older version of Norton caught it ( it was 5.01) but it couldn't clean up all the files found.

So far Norton 2001 one seems to be doing it all. Scans mail on the way in too and since that is how we got the last virus, I'm glad we have it now. It also watches while you're on the net.

New to having it, I can't hipe it too much but I have spoke to others that use it with great success.

I hope this helps!

Money isn't a problem here, almost ;)
Meaning I have no problem in getting a program that is reasonably priced, on the sole condition that it is good.
So does this make any difference?

Hello hameed,

Well I still like AVG, not because it's free but because it's worked so well for me. If you really WANT to pay for it, you could... I think you get some advanced options and tech support with the paid version :)

I use Norton Anti-virus at home and have had no problems with it. Its easy to use and works great.

At work I use McAfee. I believe a larger percent of corporations run McAfee anti-virus products then Norton.

McAfee has a TON of network anti-virus management tools that make central anti virus administration a snap.

Innoculate IT from Computer Associates is big as well.

I like Nortons for home use, and McAfee for networks.

Ya, at my previous work we used InoculateIT to protect the network but at my current one, we use McAfee. I preferred InoculateIT over McAfee tho...one major reason is it used a lot less resources than McAfee.

I have a crap computer at work and I literally just shutdown McAfee all the time (I never download or do anything to much tho) because it slows down my computer so badly that my mouse actually skips along the screen.

I have no need for the network stuff.

So I see that Norton is the way to go, right?

Ah... another succumbs to the hype of Symantic.

I will still stick to IPE and AVG. They've not let me down yet with virus trapping.

Ken thanks for the reply....good advice but now what proggie should I go with as antivirus? It is really hard to test on your home machine without a real lab to see which anti does the ebst..I dont really want to download real live viruses to see which proggie catches it....I have been using InnoculateIT for a long time ever since speedguide forums have been recommending it, but now with recent reports and seeing how EZ-trust took over.not sure what to do..I am going to try Panda from reading the review it sounds pretty good.
