Lets see, we all have access to parts so that we can build PCs, MACs, and servers from scratch yet we can't build our own laptop - why is that?

I'm sure the demand isn't as great but I'm sure it's there. I know if some manufacturers developed a shell which was basically the monitor and casing of the laptop, I would build my own.

Cases are designed specificly to the parts they put it in. Its not every day you can replace the modem or sound card on a laptop.

hell ya man! that would be cool,if a generic case was made, that had the monitor, cursor control and keyboard,

then you could easily buy parts to build the rest,
mobo,hd,ram,cpu,etc etc...to your desire....your needs.....

cool idea!

I understand there isn't any standards regarding ports and what not but wouldn't it be nice if a manufactuer designed one that would set the standard. It seems the only reason that they're was a standard for PCs is because everyone copied IBM.

Hell, you could even have different form factors to accomodate size for people that have to have the thinnest one.

True crazyman. But, as im sure you guessed, im talking about onboard sound and modems.

I would love to build my own laptop... I've always wanted one. I fix them occasionally.. i took one on vacation with me while i was fixing it and brougth my PC camera. Worked out really well.

ya I know,,it would be cool ,,

you know that would be a great idea for a business,

a store with all the parts you need(all leading technology) to come in and build a laptop for us techs.

and nothing but parts for custom laptops!

I'd like a BIG laptop. Not huge, but one with a nice beefy keyboard. I'm proportioned like a yard-gnome, my hands are huge, I can palm a basketball, and my fingers look like cigars, rather thick. If I were able to build one with a big keyboard, life would be much easier.

there arent any standards for laptops because everyone is too busy trying to think up new ones for regular pc's, there are already too damn many and none of them work as well as they could

We'll see, I have a few influential bosses and friends in this business that I could talk to that could also get me meetings with some key people to see what exactly is involved and what it will take to make this come about.
