Question About Routers?
Question About Routers?
Hey, I know that the Netgear router is "better" then the Linksys. My question is, is there anything/feature that the Linksys router does better than the Netgear? Thanx

this is interesting.. i am a linksys router User..
to be honest i never used a Netgear.. my co-worker uses a netgear and as network engineers, we seem to have never gotten into debates over which is better.. lol.. now i use the linksys for its quick set up and it at the moment suits my needs.. I would prefer to use my Cisco uBR924 Cable Access Router, but is packed up and not available at the moment.. i just recently moved.. when all is said and done, i'll have it up and ready to go..
I'm curious to see what others say as well, i've seen threads like this, but no-one states why one is better than the other... In turn since i never used a Netgear router and wasnt an option when searching for my router needs, why do people prefer the NetGear over Linksys...??

Linksys has better logging software available for it
.
We are looking into doing a ZyXEL/NetGear version of Link Logger . No promises yet, but we are looking into it.

I think the Linksys has an edge when it comes to userfriendly web based admin. That's about it.
The NetGear...better quality, faster, less bells and whistles, but for about the same price....better quality.
I've done around 60 Linksys installs, and will continue to use those in most of my clients...since the web admin is so easy to walk someone through over the cellphone when they need to do something. The NetGear goes into clients I'm more comfortable with figuring out themselves.....like how to reconnect using telnet, etc.
I've had both, and am onto my third router, a Netopia R910, which is so damn robust...but entirely differenct class. I found the NetGear much more stable than the Linky myself. The Linksys...once in a while I'd have to give it a hard reboot...it would lock up. The NetGear.....for the 6 months or so that I had it....only time I had to reboot it was in a firmware upgrade...the thing was rock stable. I noticed it was substantially faster....especially for gaming, I could have 2 computers on my DSL line playing out the router....each one had less ping than with the Linky.
It would be cool if Link logger had one for the NetGears....that is one feature the Linksys has over others.....robust logging capabilities.
It's like...for the same price...the Linksys tries to deliver too many things. You know that saying "Jack of All Trades, Master of None". The NetGear...same price....doesn't try to deliver as many features, but does what it does well.
The only thing I've seen a problem with on the NetGear is hosting a game server using the UT engine.....as far as I know it's still yet resolved, has an annoying random WAN client booting problem. The Linky is far from the best game server router also....those are what drove me to spend 300 something dollars on the Netopia...which I'm very glad to have found.
