Bandwidth management

Post by hameed_farah »

Does any one know of a program that can manage the assigned bandwidth to each thread?
Meanning, if I have a couple of IE windows, getright download, and real audio stream, is there a program that lets me assign a certain amount or ratio of the bandwidth to each thread...

In theory I know it can be done, because audiogalaxy has the bandidth throttle which can limit the progs use of bandwidth.

So can anyine help?

We discussed this once before. The conclusion was that nothing one a single PC would be able to manage bandwidth this way. One process would not be able to track the usage of others. I think your best bet would be to set up a Linux box as a router and then use the Quality Of Service utilities that are built in to throttle your bandwidth. Granted, this would probably only work to the PC level, but there may be ways to be more granular.

But I know that windows itself *is* managing the bandwidth and distributing it between various threads and forcing some threads to "let go" of the bandwidth it's using in favor of another thread.
If this wasn't the case, then any running thread with the ability to saturate your bandwidth, will do so, but in reality this isn't happennig. What I am trying to say is if you are downloading from a very fast server (that is capable of filling all the bandwidth you have) then you will not be able to even check your e-mail in the same time.

Am I making sense here, or just going crazy

I don't know of any application thread that manages bandwidth in relation to the workstation as a whole. It will say allow this much to be used and stop there.

I just want to put a limit on each thread's usage of the bandwidth. I don't want to say that this thread will use x kb/s but I want to tell it to use (at max) x kb/s.

With getright you can choose to "Always Obey Speed Limit"
Set it short of your maximum download speed, and you will still be able to surf or check mail and such while downloading.

As well, WSFTP ver 7 and Flash FXP FTP programs also incorporate download speed limits and can be set up the same way.

Also if you run a server, Like Serv-U FTP client, it can be set to have a maximum outbound speed. Thus again setting it a bit below your speed cap, will allow you to download at full speed while someone else is downloading from you at a little slower than your maximum speed.

Well, thanks. I was thinking of a more general management but I think I will have to get by with this....thanks again.
