Athlon 4 (palomino) to be an extreme overclocker.

Post by downhill »

I got this from here..................
_________________________________________________

A NEW DATA SHEET on the Athlon 4 processor suggests that overclockers will have a ball in the future.
The report, called Mobile AMD Athlon[tm] 4 Processor Model 6 CPGA Data Sheet, shows that AMD has defined new clock multipliers up to 18, while the previous route for the speed freaks only allowed a multiply of 12.5.

That means overclockability on the mobile Athlon 4 family of a 1.8GHz clock speed (18 times 100MHz), and as much as 2.4GHz (18 times 133MHz) on the up and coming 1.5GHz Palominos.

So the overclockers had better oil their fans and lubricate their heat sinks ready for the day.

Yeah so the first 1.5 probably won't hit that high, but it still looks like fun. :D

Well to accomodate the rising clock speeds, they've gotta raise the FSB or multiplyer, raising the mulitplyer is A LOT easier, so itz the obvious choice. I'm disapointed tho cuz a few months ago, AMD was experimenting with isotopically pure silicon, which if used, will lower CPU temperatures drastically, but I guess its not cost effective enough to make it to the retail product, especially with the CPU wars going on @ full force. Hopefully by sometime next year, the CPUs will get so fast, that AMD will be forced to use isotopically pure silicon or use watercooling :)

Those chips will make nice space heaters in the wintertime. 18x?? Good lord. Will make for some zippy computing.

I just want some great default performance and I think that the A4 will be definately giving up that. I hear that in the fourth quarter of this year, Intel is set to release their 2ghz processor. By then hopefully, we'll have a standard for ram (Such as SD-ram was in the past). As well, I hope that the price war continues, I'm still waiting to cash in and get a better cpu and mobo.

Yea man look at all the heat that chip will produce  So time to go out and buy a mini fridige, or better yet build an easy bake oven around it :D Yea but of couse with heat comes performance. 2.4Ghz A4 drool. Can't wait for those puppys. Peace:2cool:

I think that if you take a first generation chip, the 1.5 and try to get it very high, Yeah it's going to get VERY hot without super cooling.

But by the time AMD gets up to a 2 giger, you can bet your bottom dollar that thinner, wafers, and as TigerUpperCut pointed out, pure silicone will be the rule of the day.

Then they'd have to off load the cost difference onto the market and cosumer! Jeezz...what a horrible time to be a buyer!

EEx, what more speed do you need!?!?

Eventually, they're going to go so fast that by the time you even think about sitting down at your comp to get something done, you'll allready have done it!

When are these things supposed to be coming out anyway? I'm buying a 1.3 t bird in a few weeks....Ah the hell with it, I'll buy the t bird for now and by the time i reeeealy need to upgrade, stuff will be cheap.

guys you are missing the fact that the Palomino (A4) is a hella lot cooler then the Athlon Thunderbird, it has a larger, more spread out core, and other things done to reduce temps a lot, it runs i've heard up to twice as cool as thunderbirds......

Ya the Palomino does run cooler, but i'm pretty sure its not 2x cooler, unless they actually did use isotopically pure silicon? I haven't read anything about retail Palominos using it tho.

From my point of view

Post by terrancelam »

well yes the T-bird do run hot, BUT they only run very hot if you oc them. Otherwise, you'd be normally seeing temps of 30-50C if you have good air circulation going on in the case.

As for the A4, I can't say that I've seen an abundance of information on it, so I'm just really relying on what you guys our putting out. So far here are a few differences that I can see happening:

1.)The A4 temps, if we're lucky, will be similar to that of Intel's PIII line up.

2.)Hopefully AMD will do us a favour and cap off the core, so that it's not easily chipped.

3.)The A4 will most likely be released at 1.5ghz flavour, but not yet offically announced.

4.)The A4 is supposed to be set for the Socket A, but I've heard rumors of an adapter being needed for the A4 to be used on current Socket A boards. Also from just speculation, there is talk of AMD releasing an A4 optimized chipset.
