looks that way.
Maybe this will heat up the cpu market?

Not really....
What they are doing is trying to flood the market with their lower and cheaper P4s, (I.E the P3 1.3ghz) by making their lower mhz P4s half the price of their newest P4 1.7 ghz. Hopefully this'll force AMD to drop prices again to keep up, which I'm hoping for, I'll scoop up a T-bird soon if they keep dropping in price!

Even with the price cut, RDRAM and P4 mobos still cost more than AMD's setup

This is the cpu dude... of course rdram is spendy but eventually other ram will be offered on p4 boards and by the time intel drops rdram there will be a zillion P4s on the market, prices will be low, and a lot more software will be optimized for the technology.Originally posted by TigerUpperCut

That goes for AMD as well minus the whole rdram situation

The ONLY thing good preformance wise about the P4 setup is its 400Mhz FSB and RDRam. Replace the RDRam with DDR, and the benchmarks will suck even more.
I'm not saying that RDRam is faster than DDR, but the P4 setup has dual channel RDRam, (doubling the bandwidth, obviously) which is why you have to install Rimms in pairs, and memory bandwidth is a bit higher than the top of the line DDR setup. Keep in mind that current DDR platforms are only single channel, so unless Intel can make a dual channel DDR chipset, pairing up Single channel DDR with a P4 will kill the only edge the P4 has over AMD's current setup.
In other words, even if the price of the CPU is cut, the extra cost of RDRam, and the mobo will still make the system more expensive than a comparable AMD, keeping in mind that a 1.8Ghz P4 is roughly equal to a 1.4Ghz T-bird.
