I need to hook two cable modems up to form one connection. I know it will not be a true one connection. I need an external device (switcher or router) in order for me to do this. Internet connection sharing will not work with ethernet connections only RAS? Could i create a linux box as a gateway or something. I need some advice on how i should go about doing this. If i said anything wrong pls correct me. It is possible to do it, i know that, but how is where i am stuck. Any help would be grateful.

OS Windows 2000 pro
Cable Modems 2 Motorola surfboard 4100 docsis
Two ehternet cards

I am also wandering if there is software out there that will do it.

As far as I know you would need a Cisco router. I haven't heard of any others on the market where you can connect two WAN's together.

You will need software from http://www.midpoint.com. It will intercept web requests and break them, directing them down both lines in a 'round-robin' fashion. It is only good for stuff like webpages, where alot of 'objects' exist. It would be no good for single downloads - as you haven't bonded the line.

Correct me if I am wrong guys.......

but couldn't you just use 2 linksys routers? (or similar products)

Use the uplink to connect them together, assign seperate IP addresses, and use both IP's as gateways.

You could load balance manually depending on which primary gateway clients were assigned.

of midpoint and I just wanted to see what it was all about. So i got all the way to the point where it asked me if i should team up my connections i exited setup because my other cable modem is not hooked up yet. And it messed with everything by that point. I could not connect to internet. No ip address. Actually i dont know what it did. But after 4 restarts and me messing with the dhcp settings and the dns servers it came back up working fine. Has anyone used this software? If it trys to take control of the whole internet connection even before you install it all the way, i wander if it connects to thier server. Maybe it is my fault i am so paranoid and i should of not tryed to install it without having the other cable modem hooked up yet. I am just wandering if anyone has really tested this midpoint software. It looks like what i need except for i would need to install on a gateway pc (i dont know and it did not say if you could run it on the machine your using. If thats the case linux has load balancing built in, though i dont know much about linux. So if anyone has ideas on setting up a linux box for this, could you pls assist me. i have an old 150 nhz pc laying around i believe i could install linux on. Would it require the full version or could i use a smaller version of linux, such as trinux or something. thanks for all of your help.

That would assume his network is going to be nice and symmetrically arranged about the two connections - it doesn't 'shotgun' them.

regarding midpoint

Post by digital1007 »

I contacted thier customer service email address, and they assured me it was possible. So i went ahead and installed it all. My connection speed dropped at least 200 percent. Everything that you do goes through thier slow as proxy or something. It would not recognize that i was not connected to a LAN eventhough i configured it that away. So I am searching for a better package that does not seem to take control of the whole computer. Right now i have both cable modems hooked up. I have two ips addresses. I just installed two ethernet cards and ran everything directly to my main machine. I guess i could leave it like this, but i am afraid i would only be utilizing one of the modems, though i could have one ip as my servers. And the other ip as my personal downloads. The only reason I got two cable modems is because of bandwidth usage. I am only allowed 1 gig a day per modem. Now i am allowed two gigs a day. I wish thier was just a simple program browser or something that would let you specify which ip you want to use. Any help would be greatly appreicated. Thanks for all of your help alrdy/
