Is this normal????

Post by Matt615 »

I just ran a speedtest on my cable line a few times and even earlier today this is what I got

Test running..........
** Speed 766(down)/840(up) kbps **
(At least 15 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.

Why is the upload higher than the download??????

Well I havent tweaked yet and I just read that tweaking would fix higher uploads than downloads. So as soon as I tweak it will go a bit faster.

Im assuming you have OOL, is that correct? Try pinging your gateway to check for packet loss. Also, what speeds do you get fromt he OOL FTP?

To ping your gateway, run winipcfg, and write down the default gateway, which should end in a .1. Then open a DOS window and type "ping (gateway ip) -t". If you have packet loss, then you have a problem. Also, what are your signal levels?

Yes I have OOL. When I ping my gateway I got about 8ms as an average. The Max I got was 11 and the min I got was 7.

I dont know how to tell what my signal levels are.

And from the OOL FTP I am getting 3.9Mbps as an average. I used netstat Live to get that speed. From the IE window it reported pretty much the same thing.

Ok, the pings dont matter themselves, but were any packets lost?

Which modem do you have? And what is your RWIN set at?

I posted a separate thread about tweaking in the tweaking forum. It has the Analyzer results in it:

Change the RWIN to 64240. That is the RWIN that works best with OOL.

I use DrTCP form DSLReports.com. You can get it here: http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

It is very easy to use, and doesnt require you to go into the registry. Also, set the MaxMTU for the NIC to 1500.

If you use DrTCP there is no need to back up the registry.

What speedtest are you using?

Try http://nyc.speakeasy.net. They are very accurate.

Are you usign a NIC or USB to connect? Also, thats not a horrible speed, although it is lower than the average. You may be stuck there though.

Yes I am. I get 8600/700kbps. I have the Terayon, and with the other modems 4500 is the average speed. Some people just cant get more though.

BTW: You may want to check out the forum at http://www.dslreports.com, just for OOL. It is pretty good.
