balakov Is right. Im pretty postive that didnt do it. Maybe you accidently added/removed sumthin when you were adding/removing the ram tweak.

Tis not possible! Something is wrong with your NIC or Something got deleted when the change was made, but allocating RAM to the NIC is not going to disconnect you. ;)

re-install NIC and check your MAC address

Post by Dazzer4 »

sounds a bit squiffy,

I'd delete and re-install the NIC and all all network components (tcp/ip), but watch out for netbeui being installed aswell and remove it if you don't need (for a network).

check that the MAC address has not changed for some reason - (winipcfg from the command line for 98/95 or ipconfig /all for NT/Win2k - I assume you are a 95/98 user).

the MAC address can be dynamically assigned to the card rather than using the default 'burn't in' address. if this has changed it may prevent you from authenticating to the network correctly. check with your ISP that the MAC on your card matches the MAC address you ISP has.

Check your TCP/IP settings - not sure what your ISP requires here - if DHCP is required then check that it's set ok, or if your ISP needs a static IP check that it has not been changed to DHCP.

hope this helps.

Have yet to read anything that substantiates that tweak anyways, or proves it does anything.

Maybe you put in the wrong irq number. Or like blebs99 said there is something wrong with your nic.

With cable (it seems to be picky sometimes) about having your ip released then renewed.

Win98/ME: <Run...> - type <winipcfg> - <release ip> - <renew ip> - all set

Win2k: <Run...> - type <command> - type <ipconfig /release> - type: <ipconfig /renew>

I have had weird freakish spurts of @home cable craziness and sometimes this helps. Of course I have problems of my own since I'm particular about the performance of my connection and any little peculiarity makes me get aggravated/annoyed.

Good luck though.

OK... Not for Win2K???

Post by crazyjw1971 »

I see its a Win9x tweak, so I'm assuming it DOESNT work for Win2K (since NOTHING works in Win2K, LOL!). Am I correct?

bahahahahah... that tweak doesn't do anything. it doesn't work because there is no such command. bhahahahahaah... that's the stupidest thing i have ever heard. your nic is messed up because you probably screwed something else up inadvertently.

Personally, I found the RAM allocation to the NIC pretty much worked. I tested it without it, downloading the Directx8 SDK, a couple of times, recorded throughput, and again with it.

Yes, I clear cache each time.

I found a max 80KB/sec increase :P

Still, I'm not sure if it's really working, but it seems like it does for me.

The nic tweak works for me. I have seen a 100% increase in speed. Wish the upload was more faster, though, but I'm getting Roadrunner business soon with a .75 mbps upload :) The only thing that I have to do now is mess with the tcprecievewindow. After you do the nic tweak, you have to reboot the computer. If your nic is mess up, you may have done something wrong.

Seriously, if you kinda think about it, allocating RAM shouldnt hurt. As long as you didn't allocate the majority of it :p
