I did the same test, and my route follows that of rpeAmp once I get to New York.

It looks like the circuit between routers 12 and 13 of BlackLoti is overloaded.

Seemingly, no problems here either. Probably your route is taking a hop that is congested in UUNet's network. Latency on your route begins to increase on UUNet's last hop before Cambridge Entrepeneurial's network, or between your 12th and 13th hop. Chances are a temporary network outage.

interesting.......

This is very odd. My roomate is using a separate IP from my own, and his traceroute uses the same path, and he only hops to 90ms. He's on win98 I'm on win2K if that makes a difference.

Everything's ok right now, but i can't guarantee that it'll stay that way forever. I wish it would though. Thanks for the responses.

oh yeah, what was also interesting is that when i would tracert it the other day, the a3d.irdrunk.com IP would be different from its normal 140.186.45.45...but seemingly the packets would still get there. What would cause this?

There are many variables to take into consideration to explain the possible discrepancies, but it would be a lesson to tell so just be happy that it works. ;) Different OS's shouldn't make a difference as long as it's an IP based connection that you're making, as opposed to PPPoE. As for the different IP, it may have changed for testing purposes. DNS names will map any IP that's specified in a domain name's record. It could have been changed for whatever reason, and changed back. Who knows.. Good luck with your line.

Likely Globix and UUNet have peering agreements at the NAP you're passing through, so whenever one's network is congested, you can always get routed through the other, and vice versa. It's interesting to see how it happens, and how it's smart enough to figure out routes on the fly as it does.
