Re-Initialize Your Registry Without Rebooting

Post by BigAmp »

I just fould this, it a real time saver when your finding just the right settings.
Some registry changes require you to restart Windows before they are enabled. This tip lets you
re-initialize your registry and refresh your desktop without having to leave Windows.

Save your work before attempting this tip!

Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE, to bring up the Windows task list. Highlight 'Explorer' and click on 'End
Task', if the Shutdown screen is shown, click 'Cancel'. After a few seconds an error message will
popup, click on 'End Task' and the Windows explorer will be reloaded along with any new registry
settings.

For Windows NT or 2000, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select "Task Manager". Choose the
"Processes" tab and locate the "explorer.exe" process, highlight it and click "End Process". Select
'File -> New Task', then enter 'explorer' and click OK.

I got this at http://www.regedit.com/ take a look for your self.

This does not work for Windows 2000, I have found no way other than restarting the system. The problem lies in the fact the tcpip stack must be stopped and started again to re-read the registry settings. When you log-off it does not stop the tcpip service, when you kill explorer you are killing the GUI of your windows 2000 box and when you start it again you are starting the GUI again. In Windows 98 you can do a 'fast' reboot by holding down shift, click restart, and then ok.

keep in mind to, when doing this not all network cards will run all the time so if you do this and you cant surf you know you need to boot all the way..
