Tribes, Tribes 2
Tribes and Tribes 2 are also among the greatest online games. Its basicly capture the flag with weapons. I know Quake 3 and Unreal Tournment ( both great games) have it also but Tribes/2 allows you to place base defense and require you to defend more that you flag, along with multiple types of armour and vehic's

Well, you're prolly gonna have to unload at least some of all that stuff you run in the background before gaming. Bogging your system down badly man, a little overkill there.
Quake1 was what fully hooked me into online game, then Quake2, Half Life, Unreal, Quake3, Unreal Tournament, Rune....man, once you play online against other people, for me there's simply no going back to single player against the same boring old computer opponents.
Good reading on Quake...http://www.planetquake.com
Unreal and UT.....http://www.planetunrealtournament.com
etc....

Hey Kid,
I may be biased and I don't want to get into some HL/Quake III/UT flame war with anybody, but I like HL based modifications the best so far that I've seen. I recently got Quake III and while the mods for it have stunning graphics, I don't like the gameplay as much. Too spastic. But then again, that could be me
I'll keep trying them.
Anyway, you will probably have to buy one of these base games and download the mods you want to play. I don't find the standard deathmatch that comes with most of them very enjoyable.
With HalfLife, you can buy the Game of the Year Edition and download CounterStrike and Day of Defeat or other popular mods free. Game of the Year Edition is pretty cheap now, cause its been out a while. If you hate downloading large files, the Platinum edition has TeamFortress and CounterStrike already there I think. But you will probably have to download an update to the Half Life engine no matter what you buy.
It's pretty much the same deal with Quake III. You buy that (I got it pretty cheap last weekend) and you can download Urban Terror mod and Q3F (Team Fortress for Quake III) and install for free.
I don't have Unreal Tournament, but I think it is similar.
You should check out some websites dedicated to the game you are playing. A quick search on Google, will turn up plenty. Read the newbie guides. Some of the rules are tricky and most people online are gunning for n00bs and don't have time to help you learn. The first thing I did was change my keyboard mappings to make it easier.
So, I don't know if you're like me (CHEAP!) but if so, look for the basic game and download the other stuff free later. I don't see what the games that come with all the free mods loaded on the CD are really buying you. Unless you have a lousy Internet connection, in which case, these games may be lame anyway because of lag.
But Good luck with it and I hope to kill you (whoops) see you out there sometime.

Well,
Since you've never played any online game, I would suggest buying a copy of HalfLife for starters. Then just jump into straight up deathmatch to get your feet wet.
After you have a feel for things, THEN branch out to the various modifications such as team play, etc...
You should also download a game query tool like Gamespy, Kali, etc... so you can find all of the online game servers.
Personally, I like Kali (supports over 200 games), which has an interface very similar to windows explorer and pretty easy to figure out. Most charge a one time fee of $20 for the license to use their software, then it's on to happy fraggin'.

I'd recommend getting UT and trying out the straight DM and CTF that it comes with. Then go and get the Infiltration mod at http://www.planetunreal.com/infiltration

Online Games
If you're into Fantasy-style games you should try out EverQuest. However its been known to be a bit addictive. So be careful if you decide to play it
(btw I'm not trying to endorse this game at all because I work for the company who develops the game. I'm merely pointing out that this is an Online Game.)
http://www.everquest.com
The games I play myself are the following:
StarCraft http://www.blizzard.com
Tribes 2 http://www.tribes2.com
EverQuest
Unreal Tournament http://www.unrealtournament.com
Counter Strike
Rogue Spear
Quake III
I myself really enjoying playing FPS (first person shooters) so I tend to stick with Unreal Tournament style games. Hopefully after configuring my friggen' router I'll be able to play all the games without any problems.
There's a bunch of games out there. You just have to figure out what type of game you like to play. Think of it this way....
Do you like to Roleplay?
-Try EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call, & Ultima Online
Do you like to Kill Players?
-Try a FPS. Quake, Unreal Tournament, Tribes 2
Do you like Strategy Games?
-Try an RTS (Real Time Strategy) Starcraft, WarCraft (Blizzard is a great company)
There's a lot of games out there. Pick some up and try a few out to figure out what you like to play.

It depends on what kind of games you like...
If you're into First-Person-Shooters
. Half-Life: Counter-Strike
. Unreal Tournament I go here when I'm tired of playing CS
these two rock the online scene, hehe. I'd suggest buying Half-Life then downloading the Counter-Strike mod. The retail version of Counter-Strike is not worth paying for...
Strategy Gaming:
. StarCraft - love this game!
. Age Of Empires 2: Age of Kings - haven't played that online yet, until i can defeat the comp at hardest skill. Great game none the less!!
Dunno what category this fits in but:
. Continuum (freeware)
highly addictive and great ppl. Very welcoming to n00bs.
once u get the controls and game physics under control, you will never leave this game!
(i'm highly biased here, and to think, i never liked this genre)
And for maximum online gaming experience, get yourself a decent internet connection... like cable or dsl... if possible a T1 to T3 or even an OC+!! lol damn, I'm fantasizing again
Well, that summarizes it. These games are worth paying for... have a go... i used to own their warez, but, my consience hit me. Well, not really, I was after legit serial numbers so I can play online, and they really are worth paying for, until the time these games die.

It's the same nowadays with most real-time strategy games... they do the same as well with Age Of Empires... gets frustating... wish ppl just wouldn't rush rush rush... but then again, it's a strategy, and all strategies have weaknesses... learn how to counter it.Originally posted by Juggernaut
Starcraft is good if you play with u'r friend or something, but playing on the net, all it is is RUSH! It's no fun that way, u barely ever get to any higher level units and there's not much strategy anymore. It's whoever can build the most units the fastest.
build good enuff defenses, fend off their rush... watch them lose unit after unit, and watch their economy go down as you build yours up, and haha, you've got them beat =)

If you want to play a real tactical ops game I highly recommend Swat 3 you can download the multiplayer upgrade, mods, and demo on there website http://sierrastudios.com/games/swat3/. This is the best tactical game out ther. It's better than strike force and strike force is a cool game. It's bett than the demo of RougeSpear because thats all Iv'e played. If your lookingfor a driving game try Need for Speed 3 it's pretty fun but I haven't figured how to play online yet.
