Am I the only one happy with @home????
Hi I just wanted to Take a moment to say how much I enjoy my @home connection.I like to think of myself as a hardcore gamer. I'm also a cable modem installer by trade. I install them in a nearby town. It wasnt untill recently that Cable was in availible in my town, so I had been using Bellsouth DSL(while I wated For Cable). I am MUCH happier now my pings are lower (generally 25-50ms In TRIBES).I did however implement every speed tweak I know to see such performance . As for download speeds Bellsouth didnt even come close. My current best with @home was the 80MB counterstrike patch i downloaded at 325 KILOBYTES/sec. "KILOBYTES not kilobits" So my question is "Am I The Only One Happy With @HOME?

NPORTMAN, I was browsing these forums looking for some hints as to why I've been receiving some strange timeouts and dropped packets while I play TFC and UT, and saw your netgraph pics.
I live in Richardson too, and have experienced the EXACT difficulties you have. This all started within the first week of december, and has been ongoing ever since.
I think I shall send you an email to see if you've gotten any info out of the customer service people.

Holy_Moly!
I have Comcast@home and I have to say that I am very pleased. ALthough my downloads aren't spectacular (around the 200kB-300kB/s range), I get nice pings in CS (around 50ms). One time I played on a server that was here on the West Coast and I hovered around the 34ms range the entire game... that's like a LAN game!

excuse my untimely response, but I'm new here and wanted to make sure all open Subspace issues are covered. I'd hate to see anyone miss out on the greatest on-line game ever abandoned

I am happy with my Comcast@Home connection. I live in TN:

i'm wasnt very happy with it, but...
well, my @home was very unreliable, so i canceled it and got DSL, sure its much MUCH slower, but at least i can have access to the internet WHENEVER i want, not downlines or anything of that kind.
But i must say, that once the 2 way Look Cable comes out, i'm getting that for sure, they say their modems are twice as fast as @Home's (3mbits)

I am also an avid Tribes 1 player .... been playing for about 3 years now. The first 2 years were on dial-up then I switched over to @ home cable and it is a HUGE difference from 300-450 ping times to 30-60
But I must say that because of the dial-up to cable switch I can crush most everyone.

Any tweak I see I try, I tried caculating every value by hand, putting a magnet on my RJ45 to remove noise.. Anything I hear I try long as it seems logical/n-Dave

In my area @home seems pretty good. I have aDSL....but with a really high quality fast ISP....not the crappy local phone company which sucks. Yes cable around here generally beats DSL in raw downloading and uploading, but I beat the pants off it with my low ping. Yet compare cable against phone company DSL, and cable wins in pings too.
Depends on how smart you are when you shop and what your priorities are. My friends can brag all they want they they can download a hundred meg file faster than me....but I don't care, because I'll out ping them all day and all night, and I can play with several game clients from my house, unlike many cable setups which skyrocket their ping whenever 2 or more players try to play at once from the LAN.

THanks
