Congradulations. You will love the new speeds you're going to be receiving from a broadband connection. Why let them install it? It's simple... I feel more comfortable doing things on my own... I dunno... They charge too much for that simple stuff.. Anyway, congradulations on your new level to internet connectivity :)

Don't run a dedicated server as most cable providers don't allow this ( I have never heard of any that do ).

Rent one because if they upgrade later on you will be assed out and have to buy another one or if the modem breaks then they will just replace it for you.

I agree - don't buy a modem. For the $10/month that you maybe might save, you become responsible for it. Mine went out in less than a year, and it was AT&T Roadrunner's problem for both the service call to find out that it was the modem (and not my equipment), and to furnish me with a new (and upgraded) one.

Rent the modem becuase if it breaks they'll replace it for free. And don't run any type of servers or you'll be back on 56k real fast.

since when do they not allow you to run servers? regardless of what server you run you arent going to use any more bandwidth than you are paying for.

Most cable setups I've seen, actually all of them, in my area, you have the same IP address, hasn't changed on anyone I know.

I wouldn't worry about having a fixed IP address for running game servers, as your server will broadcast itself anyways, and people connect by server name. Who cares if if your IP changes and they're not able to add you to their favorites folder, they'll get over it.

Those reg tweaks and all those MTU hacks, etc, haven't seen them do jack squat for me.

I agree, Most of the tweaks in the patches found here wont help anything except maybe the recive buffer but that isnt really going to make your cable into a T-1 by any means.
