Tweaking the Reg. In Windows 98

Post by One Liberty »

Okay call me crazy, but I did something that suprised me it worked.

I have this:

Window 98
Cyrix MII 300Mhz
192 MB of SDRam
6.4 Gig HD
1.6 Gig HD
Riva TNT 16 MB Video
SiS 5598 Sound Card
Cable Modem by Tobisha pcx100
Biostar Socket 7 motherboard w/512 cache

I did this:

I added a key to the reg. of Windows 98 that was a key from Windows2000

I added a key to the reg. of Windows 98 that was a key from Windows NT

The first key: Enhancing cable modems in Win 2000
The sec. key: Enables the cache in Win NT

No system hangs, and no freezes up!

Pretty cool huh?

Ta Ta!

What were the keys? I think Windows ignores key is doesn't recognize. Maybe that is why it still works?

The Tweak Reg. Keys I used in Window98

Post by One Liberty »

{Windows NT Cache Tweak}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

SecondLevelDataCache=00,02,00,00

{Window 2000 Cable/DSL Tweak}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

DefaultTTL=80,00,00,00
EnablePMTUBHDetect=00,00,00,00
EnablePMTUDiscovery=01,00,00,00
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize=4c,ae,05,00
SackOpts=01,00,00,00
Tcp1323Opts=03,00,00,00
TcpWindowSize=4e,ae,05,00

I seem to have better loading time and pages on the internet load even before the loading bar reaches full size. These keys were added to a Windows 98 Reg.

Any expert advice on this would be great??
Or maybe Im just seeing things??

Try this... this is Lobo's help page.

http://www.broadbandnuts.com/dslnuts/Lobo/help.shtml

Follow all the directions there and you will be hooked up!

Im suprised none of the "gurus" have been in here yet...

Im not sure what my upload is, but I am using a monitor from the ZDNet to test the true connection.

Looking at my Rec. and Sent. They are:

Kbytes Received: 1,650.30
Kbytes Sent: 162.64

I have a tobisha PCX100 modem.

Try a speed test here

http://bos.speakeasy.net

or here

http://nyc.speakeasy.net

They are both closer to you!

Good luck!

I used PC Pitstop

Post by One Liberty »

Text Block Size 200 KB Download Time 5050 ms Receive Buffer 8192 bytes Transmission Speed 317 Kb/s

Upload Speed 271 Kb/s

These were my test results....

Hmmm
Should I go with a 100 tbase ethernet card for a faster responce?

Take one of those tests again and copy and paste exactly the results you get. You are on cable right, not DSL? Cable only uses 10 or 10/100 cards... no need for a 100 NIC. Most cards are 10/100 and they auto-sense 10Mb 1/2 duplex for the cable modem settings.

Copy and paseted did that?

Post by One Liberty »

Yes, Those were the copied and pasted setting from PC Pitstiop.

This might also help you, in my settings on my card I did this:

The card is:
AsanteFast 10/100 PCI Rev. B Card

Settings are:
Burst Length 32DWords
Connection Type: 10Base-T Full Duplex
Transmit Threshold Store and Forward or 1024 Bytes

Those were the true settings as instructed by PC Pitstop and Lobos

Any comments??

If you need to, you can IM me at:

blackfox_700@msn.com
one_liberty2000@aol.com
hpc_2003@yahoo.com

Thanks for all the help. :)

I think 1/2 duplex is what you need for the cable modem. Mine is set at 10Mb 1/2 duplex and it runs fine. If I set it to auto detect the media that is what is sets itself at.

Take one of the other tests and post your results here. Those PC Pitstop numbers look funny!

I've also been told not to take too many of PC Pitstop's suggestions, so be careful. Some of the "tweaks" out there return your settings to default!

New Settings

Post by One Liberty »

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 113 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Seem to be far better, anymore tweek can I get from this/

You could try a larger RWIN. This is easier if you get Cablenut's Adjuster. Try Lobo's help page at
http://www.broadbandnuts.com/dslnuts/Lobo/help.shtml

It helps you through getting the Adjuster installed and all the tweaks configured properly.

You should be getting alot more than 317Kb/s download speed... something isn't quite right.

Test your speed at this URL after you do everything Lobo's help page says to do...

http://nyc.speakeasy.net

Come back in here and let us know!

Okay heres the findings

Post by One Liberty »

(Before Patches)
1430 Down 272 Up
28 x faster than 56k

(With Patches)
940 Down 262 Up
18 x faster than 56k

Also downloaded the vfx file too.

Any help, so far you guys are great. Thanks!

Another Test

Post by One Liberty »

This time I added the "Large" in the size area on Cablenut and got this:

Your download speed : 1429021 bps, or 1429 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 174.4 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 267737 bps, or 267 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Any input guys??

Did you follow all the directions on Lobo's help page?

Carefully check all that over and make sure it is all correct, and try again.

Sure Did

Post by One Liberty »

I even uninstalled my net card, modem software, cablenut and restored the reg.

Then installed it all, and followed the directions.

Hmmm more tweaking later.

Thanks :)

Chose to use the Windows 2000

Post by One Liberty »

Your download speed : 1434520 bps, or 1434 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 175.1 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 266666 bps, or 266 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Okay this is what I got when using the Win2000 Settings from Cablenut 4.0 software

Just used the default settings, now going to add some values to see what happens

One Liberty

BTW Im using a Win98 OS and Win2000 Reg Keys for the modem.

Add some values

Post by One Liberty »

Your download speed : 1472894 bps, or 1472 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 179.7 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 266844 bps, or 266 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Okay here I choose to add the value of 642400 or
64240 x 44 ^ 10 = 642400

Again I used the Cablenut 4.0 and told it I had Win2000 not the OS it detected.

Hmmm, any input gentlemen?
