high voltage in DSL phone cable

Post by webtek »

I noticed a spark while I was plugging in my phone line to the external DSL modem. I got curious and dusted off the ol' multimeter to discover that there is 51.5v on the line!

Is this right?

I'm no telephone tech, but that is pretty standard. My home line POTS line is at 40V DC to ground. My DSL dry wire is 49V DC to ground.

Voltage won't kill you, but current will.

POTS voltages are standard!!!

Typical POTS voltages are as follows:

Dial tone voltage 48 VDC

Ringing voltage 90 VAC

Any suspected trouble, check and/or substitute the DSL splitter or filter to ensure proper isolation.
