Intel Ethernet Adapter Crazy Man Tweak

Post by cablenut »

Hey all im back again with a test file for you guys :)

This reg file should enable TCP/IP checksum Offloading for Intel Pro 100+ series of cards. Just merge the file and reboot and it should default to TCP/IP checksum offloading. This is Windows 2000 ONLY right now. TCP will generate a checksum on a packet on a send/recieve this takes up cpu cycles. Offloading it to the ethernet adapter will decrease cpu usage and improve performance generally. Offloading is done via the NDIS driver wrapper. This tweak might work with other Intel adapters also.

Updated with "checksum.reg" will test later and see how well it'll work with my Pro/100+ Managment Adapter.

How does the TCP/IP checksum offloading differ from the Intel version 5 software performance tuning feature, for increasing/decreasing bandwidth/CPU usage?

Check you network card. If you are not useing 2000. Some cards have settings on them to lower your cpu usage. I know mine does I have a 3com Office connect. It has all those settings.

Broadband Intel's adaptive technology and tcp/ip checksum offloading are two different things. I have my technology tuned all the way to bandwidth :)

Before updating with "checksum.reg" www.dslreports.com tested and reported my download speed as 3817 kbps.

After the update, the ideal would be to test with www.dslreports.com, however, had no tool points; therefore I had to test with www.computer4sure = 4425.2 Kbps and www.optiview.com = 4808 kbps for a second confirmation.

It would seem that with an average score of 4616.6 Kbps it would indicate roughly a 20.9% performance increment after the update.

Keep them tweaks coming!

TCP/IP Checksum Offload Reg File for Intel Pro 100+ series of cards

Reg files for Windows 98 and 2000 now. Included are the two reg files and universal uninstaller for both of them. If you feel you do not want this tweak applied anymore right click on the inf file provided and go to install.

NOTE: In Windows 2000 when it deletes the entries in your network adapter advanced settings it will say "No Description" this is fine it just means that it deleted the Taskoffload option correctly. When you reapply the patch this will get rid of the "No Description". Same thing happens in 98 but in 98 there is just a blank space.

These will enable TCP/IP Checksum offloading for the following Intel cards:

Any 82557, or 8255a based chip Intel ethernet adapter. Examples:

Intel 100+ Series
Intel 100+ Management Pci adapter

Also once again this does not affect gaming it only offloads TCP CHECKSUMS now games which use UDP have checksums also but it does not offload UDP checksums :(

It works great, I also noticed lower pings on gaming, and faster web page loadings!
