Signal Amplifier

Post by MrGsx-R »

While talking to technical support guys for @home...which happens often with their service....one of the techs told me about his friend hooking up a signal amplifier to his cable modem. He said it doubled his speed. Sounds worth a shot to me. I go to the local Radio Shack...pick up a High-Gain in-line signal amplifier. I hook it up and dont get anything. I cant access e-amil or internet. Hook it up normal and it works fine. Is this just a bunch **** or is it possible to get this to work?

I would like that info also. I recently changed my CAT 5 cable that came from the manufacture and replaced it with a FastCaT 5 cable. I'm cruising much faster than before and video streams don't jitter as much. Every litle bit helps. rbtweak@adelphia.net

No amps on cable modems, when line comes from pole to your house it is split, one to TV's one to modem, the splitter that is put here dictates how much signal comes to your modem, if you change this it will not work :)

would it work if the amplifier was hooked up before the splitter? Or if a different splitter was used?

You are a speed demon, I don't know anything about filters but tell me if you are on cable, whose, OS, proxy server? and do this please:
Please click up above on our tweak test/ TCP/IP
Analayzer. so I may see test results do this :
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you. :)

TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 373360
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 46670
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 14934.4 kbps (1866.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 5973.76 kbps (746.72 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 54 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Im running a p3 700 windows ME 128mb ram Linksys 10/100 card with @home cable.
With the download accelerator at happypuppy i can download game demos around 800 KB/s. I use to be able to get a lot faster downloads. But it keeps getting slower....i suppose cause more people on the line.

Try changing Default RVC Window (RWIN to 481800 or 513920, see if that is any better, it looks like speedcorp patch so change RWIN in there little adjuster :)

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average.
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time www.AOL.com seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

I changed my rwin to 513920. I use cablenut 4.0.....nice program. I delete temp and temp internet files often. Defrag with norton speed disk. I just downloaded the 50.9 MB star wars demo from happypuppy with netstat live. average incoming was 753.9KB max was 871.5KB. I had norton auto protect enabled and black ice on also. I know i can get a little better with those 2 off....but with all the messing around i do they have saved me a few times.

Well I would say thats pretty good for this time of day and with those programs running, it will be alot faster early in morning without those programs running, also here are two more of numbers from Cablenut that might work for you, 522680, 524176 (RWIN's) :)

Thanks a lot for the help...anymore tips will be appreciated. Guess ill have to get my $30 back for the signal booster. Need gas money for the new bike.
