LAN disabled by Norton Internet Security ??

Post by Discover »

I sure would appreciate any advice on myh inablility to network my 2 Win98Se computers. They have individual IP addresses and are on a hub connected to a cable modem. I once had the LAN working but lost it. I have tried many different things for many hours and all I can get now is for each computer to see itself on the LAN. They will not see the other computer.

Norton Internet Security Firewall rewuired input of the IP adresses in order to allow the LAN to work. Originally when I did this everything was fine. I have done a reinstall of Win98Se and some cable modem windows tweaking.

I was trying to LAN through the TCP only. It works fine on the cable modem for the internet. I just tried adding NetBeui and binding the Client for Microsoft NEtworks and File and Printer sharing. I removed the those 2 bindings fgrom TCP. Still doesn't work.

When first clicking on Networking it says it is unable to browse the network. After closing and trying a second time it opens the network displaying only itself as the only computer connected. This is the same on both machines.

Got any ideas??
Thanks

Thanks GLC for the reply. My IP's are assigned by RoadRunner and I have tried both options on the TCP IP Properties tab, i.e., assigning the IP and Obtain automatically.

I just tried pinging the other computers IP and get: Request TImed out.??? I'll go back and specify the address in the TCP Properties.
However, I think that when I specify the IP then my internet quits working......

I have IP = 65.x.x.x
Kids have IP = 65.x.x.x
Subnet mask = 255.255.252.0
I see, you have two IPs from your provider. I didn't realize that when I posted, sorry. I'd go back and edit them out of that post.

As for the sharing problem, does each PC have a unique computer name and is each PC logged into?
Have you tried networking w/ the firewall off? Have you double checked the firewall settings?

if you still have norton internet security installed. you need to configure it for the lan. by default it will shut the lan connection down and leave the internet up. im trying to think of where to go in internet security, to enable it. i cant remember, look in the manual. if not ill try to look it up. give me some time. your not the first to get this surprise.
