Is it possible to share a Cable modem, using only a hub?

Post by gtcrispy »

Ok today after finally getting my brothers computer up and running a with a new cpu and vid card etc, it seems as if the crossover cable that we had installed about 4 months ago died. This morning win2k would recognize that the cable was pluged into my 2nd nic. Then later on suddenly it would say the cable was unplugged. I tried removing the nic and then putting it back in but it didn't work. So then I tried the cat 5 wire that comes from teh cable modem into my first nic and plugged the cable into the 2nd nic and it said that their was a cable plugged in so I figure that the cable went bad somehow. After using the crossover cable and a proxy server, I though that I might try using a hub, but then I realized that it might not work and I would need to get a router. I really don't have the money to spend on a broadband router but is it possible to set up a lan and share a cable connection by just using a hub?

Thanks
Kevin

Yes, you can run a proxy setup with a Hub. Its pretty simple. This pic should explain it. PLUG NOTHING TO THE UPLINK PORT ON THE HUB. Then just setup the Proxy SW as you normally would.

Ok, thats what I was thinking somewhat. However I just noticed that on the Netgear RT314 there is a $30 mail in rebate, so I could buy it for for 129.99-139.99 and It would be around 100 bucks. Would it be worth it to get this and not a hub?

I prefer the Router option over the hub anyday, if you have the money, definitely go with the Router. I have the Linksys router my self, works great.

Ok I think I will go with the router cause I can get it tomorrow by ordering through outpost.com. I just have to go buy some new cat-5 patch cables.

Thanks

Good choice, as outpost is offering free overnight shipping on orders over $100. :) I got my RT314 from them several days ago.

The thing on the picture will work fine, but the computer with the two NIC's have to be on in order for the other people to have access to the internet. My suggestion is get a one-port router from Linksys or Netgear, both sell them pretty cheap around $60. All you need to do then is connect the one port router to your hub.
