Pop Quiz for Network Champs

Post by Alteon »

Real quick question. i wanted to know if anyone can answer this. The minimum frame ethernet can send is 64 bytes(octets). Why is this? 2 hints. it has to do with the CD in CSMA/CD. And the old 10Base5 ethernet's 5-4-3 rule. If you think im insane thats ok. my boss asked me this and i figured it out with pen a paper and some simple algebra. i didnt get those hints either just wondering who else knows.

I believe the answer to this question has to do with timing. By setting a minimum frame size in the original 802.3 spec, the frame would have a chance to make it through the whole network (limited in size by 5-4-3 rule) thereby avoiding collisions. But I could be wrong. I think I'll do some research on this one.

very close. it does have to with the propagation on the signal down the line. think of the worst case scenario and thats why its 64bytes.
