Installing Linksys router on Win2kpro??!

Post by striderf1 »

I'm posting thi becuase I have a problem with my new laptop. I can't set it up so it recognizes my internet connection, which is basically my linksys router. I went into internet explorer and I and I typed in http://192.169.1.1 but I got nothing, and the instructions that are included with the router are only for win9x, not for win2kpro (which came with the computer. thats very good, because now I can legally have win2k on my regular computer). So how do I set up the router? Brent? anyone else with the router? anyone? thanks!

Admin addy on the linky by default, is 192.168.1.1, not 192.169.1.1.

Default password is admin.

Ping 192.168.1.1 to be sure.
Observe everything...focus on nothing..

striderf1, how is the TCP/IP stack configured on the laptop and is the router's DHCP server enabled or disabled?

I have no idea what is a tcp/ip stack is, and I don't know how to check it to see the status of it. the routers DHCP Server is Enabled.

TCP/IP stack = TCP/IP properties.
Is the laptop setup dynamically or statically? Statically means it has an IP, Gateway, Subnet mask, etc. entered.

I'm having the same problem right now with my Netgear RT314. I had removed the router to test out my ftp but when I wanted to hook it back up I couldn't get it to work. I couldn't access the setup or anything. I'm running win2kpro also.

- Is the Link / Act light on for the port your PC is connected to?

- Can you ping 192.168.1.1?

- Do you have your TCP/IP setting set to automatic? Or do you have a manually configured IP?

- Did you try re-setting the router to factory defaults?

I don't know if I have the tcp/ip setting to automatic, how do I find out? I haven't tried setting the router to factory defaults, but I don't see how that would make a difference, becaue I have my other comp w/ win2kpro hooke up to.

I can NOT ping my laptop to the router. the link/act light that goes to the pc is NOT on. the laptop has a built in 56k modem AND a built in 10/100 nic card, but I think the computer is trying to find the conncection through the regular modem and not the nic card, how do I have the computer try to have the nic card work properly? (I don't know if that last statement makes any sense, I just want the nic 'talkin' to the router)

On my computer, I resetted the power to the router, and this allowed me to configure it etc. However it still won't let me access the internet. I can ping 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, and 192.168.0.3. My nic is set to obtain a ip automaticaly. Any ideas?

You're running 2k pro on the laptop, correct? Right click on My Netwrok Places on the Desktop and select properties. Then, right click the NIC and select Properties. Double click TCP/IP. If you want to use the router's DHCP server, select obtain in both fields.

Chances are you do, since this is a new laptop. But you can check by selecting My Computer, right click, properties, and look
at the System Properties box. On the right side, the item is System; under here you will see a listing that should say something like:
Microsoft Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack 1

This is a problem- if there is no link, there can be no communication;

start/settings/control panel/network and dial-up connections; do you have an item listed here for "Local Area Connection" ? Or, is the only thing(s) you have listed phone connections?

Is your NIC enabled and functioning? My Comp; properties/ device manager/network adapters- all OK there, or a yellow mark?

Open your browser and go to Tools-Internet options-Connections-LAN Settings and put a check in the box the says "Automactically detect settings".
