Is this just an overreaction or do you think it's something I should be thinking about? (I have a TP router)

Sounds like a bit of an escalation on the trade war... Government has a hard time keeping up with all the technology and it creates a problem, especially with foreign/chinese-owned companies. The list of companies/hardware/apps/software not allowed on government computers keeps growing, just like TikTok, WeChat, Whatsapp, and even Android apps like CamScanner, websites like Temu, Tutor.com, AliExpress, etc.
After Huawei and ZTE, seems now TP-Link is a target of this. Not only government agencies, but also ISPs, and even State Universities ban some of those technologies.

It may be that those routers were hacked and it is not malicious intent on TP-Link's side, it may be just a coincidence that large number of devices were going through their routers.. I wouldn't worry too much about it for personal use, but I'd monitor the company for how they address the accusations I suppose.
