I've been looking into dumping my current ISP (Charter) and going somewhere else. I've called them several times requesting a lower rate but they just don't want to budge like they use to. Frontier is offering a plan that would be a substantial discount over Charter. Substantial enough to make me want to switch.
Here's the thing. I worry about that wherever I go I may not be able to take my current email address with me. And, even if I do I worry about the terms of any agreement changing in the future and then having to scramble at the last minute to inform everyone my new address. I'm considering creating a new Gmail account and slowly transferring all my personal business over to that. Once done, start looking for a new carrier.
My problem is I worry about Gmail. I have nothing to back that up but I have balked at doing this because using Gmail (or MS) just doesn't seem right. The GMail address would be used for all my banking and investments, I'd like it to be secure.
Looking for suggestions and advice.
Changing my primary email address?
Re: Changing my primary email address?
Gmail should be secure, at least similarly secure to your ISP's email account if you think about it. The only alternatives are going to b e other maill-only providers, or running your own domain/email service through a registrar (Namecheap, etc). It gets a lot more involved and less convenient.
I like GMail for the anti-spam controls, easy mobile integration, etc. These days it is hard to escape the cloud completely, there are some conveniences.

Re: Changing my primary email address?
Do I have to register a completely new account for each email address (Gmail). Currently I have 4 different addresses with Charter account i.e. banking, online selling, friends etc.
Re: Changing my primary email address?
Four separate accounts may be a bit much to juggle (even though you get a separate 15GB storage)... You can create "aliases" instead, under: settings > accounts
Re: Changing my primary email address?
After posting I did a little more research and I think the alias option may be the way to go. My biggest concern is spam. For the majority of my PC lifetime I've been blessed with virtually little to no spam emails. Yes, I do get them but maybe about 2 a month up to about 3 months ago and now I'm getting my fair share. I like having a separate account for anything non critical that I can close down at a moments notice without any fear. I guess it mostly boils down to how secure the places I have my email with protect them. I'm sure some of them are selling it anyway though.
Re: Changing my primary email address?
The amount of incoming spam depends on how visible it is, and how "leaky" the places that have it are, as you mentioned already. Only processing/categorizing mail once it arrives is up to your mail provider.
