Change Wireless Router?

Post by GarnetB »

Hi, I was wondering if I could ask you a question like this. We have good internet, 2 computers are connected by wired network. But the wi fi sometimes works badly, that is, it disappears when you are in a place that between the router and me 2 walls, and then it does not work well. The kitchen we have quite far away, about 8 meters from the router, also the walls prevent. if the doors are open still works a little bit.
And now the question, maybe I should change the router, and will the result, so that in the kitchen also worked or there are other ways?
I play fair here, but I always strive to win.

Newer generation routers work better, as in WiFi 6 (802.11 ax) will work better than WiFi 5 (802.11 ac).
Also, usually 2.4GHz works better for wall penetration over 5GHz.

You can try moving your current router a bit closer, or higher. If it has external antennae, they should be perpendicular to the direction you are trying to reach, as they radiate the signal in a donut-shape around them.

Still want to upgrade mine. But I can't get it to make sense.
Since we have no issues whatsoever lol.

Also the only thing using Wifi now is Phones/Tablets/Cameras and the stupid Google Nest thing.
TVs are all hard wired as is my stupid smart speaker/soundbar.

Guessing also having a decent router and using the 'Wireless Router' in AP mode helps.

I only upgrade when I start noticing shortcomings/slowdowns/range issues. I've noticed some improvement every time I change WiFi generations.

That's basically where I'm at lol.

The Asus 'Router' I have is RT-AX82U
so it's already Wifi6 (AX)

A few years old now but still working well. Just sitting on top of the printer in my office at the house.

If you're already using a WiFi 6 router I don't see the point... Maybe if it is bogged down with many clients and the CPU is running at 100% load or something, other than that I wouldn't upgrade.
