Win2K Server with 2 NICs

Post by VirginNetwork »

I have been trying to setup my LAN to have access to internet using Win2K server advance.
Here is my setup:
- 1 PC - Win 2k Ad Server
- 1 PC host using Win 2k prof
- the server has 2 NICs one for ISP and other for local area networks.
a. ISP NIC has static IP as follow provided by my ISP
IP: 208.190.82.241
Sub: 255.255.255.0
GateWay: 208.190.82.246
DNS: 151.164.1.8 & 151.164.1.7

b. LAN NIC has
IP: 10.0.0.1
Sub: 255.0.0.0
*GW: (blank)
*DNS: 10.0.0.1
*I don't know if this setting is correct

My internet access does not seem to be stable after this setup.
Sometime it works sometime it does not.
It seems to confuse the package not knowing which NIC to use.
I think it has to do with my ROUTING but I don't really know how to set this up.
I also try to setup a NAT so my workstation can access the internet after login the server but I failed.
I am using DHCP for my LAN. Any suggestion and help would be appreciated. Thank-you. :(

Why not use ICS and share the NIC connected to your ISP? Just curious :)

I have the same setup, what u need to do is setup the remote and routing option on windows 2000 or u can buy the nat software sygate which is what i am using right now. it is very easy to setup the only configuration u have to do is to put in the dns server addresses

Just want to learn how real LAN works in the outside world since I know most of them do not use ICS on the server. I really want to learn to setup my own LAN at home controlling the access of the internet.

One option (out of many) is to run routing software such as winroute. You simply setup the WAN nic with its static IP, and then give assign the LAN nic to the internal network to act as a gateway. This new box (and it doesn't need a lot of resources!) is your gateway. Another option is to just buy a gateway/router from linksys, dlink, etc However you will not get all of the pretty network graphs and utilization logs.

Try this link, I was using ICS in W2KAS but it ended up becoming unstable. I switched to NAT and things are better and faster. http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/win2000/connint.asp

good luck..
