Post by Debbie »

Can you guys help me with this? I want to convert mp4 youtube videos to an audio file format that will play on portable cd players. What format should I use. Suggestions for conversion software?

Hi Debbie :)

You can extract the audio track from videos to mp3 using VLC Media Player, for example: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
In VLC, navigate to Media > Convert/Save > select your file > Stream output to file (choose mp3).

After that, you can simply use your favorite CD-burning app, i.e. Nero, PowerISO, even Windows Media Player.

There are two different ways to record the audio on the CD-R..

1) Audio CD - this format plays in all/older CD players. The only reason that wouldn't play is if the player can't read "recordable" media at all (it has lower reflectivity than stamped silver CDs). In a PC, you will only see "tracks", not mp3 files. The audio is recorded in lossless PCM stereo format, not mp3 compressed.
2) CD-ROM/Data CD - records a directory with mp3 files, visible in Windows as well.. Many newer car/home CD/DVD players can read/decode it, some older ones can't read sub-directories. I imagine you recorded it in this format if the player doesn't recognize it.

Ultimately, you'd have to figure out what format your CD player supports, if it is an older player you may have to record in Audio CD format since they can't read/decode mp3s, you would have to specifically choose "Audio CD" format when burning the CD. The standards that audio players support are often stamped on the lid.

If it doesn't read it in audio format, then it may not be able to read recordable media at all... CD-Rs are easier to read for older players than CD-RWs, and not all media is the same (blue/violet tinted is usually harder to read imho). Ultimately, it may not work at all if the player wasn't designed to be able to read CD-Rs at all.
