So I have port forwarded in the past and it has gone smoothly, now when i try nothing happens, i have netgear wrn200v4 router and a ubee DVW3201B modem isp timewarner. I spent all day yester trying to figure out what was wrong. first i took my windows firewall down. then i port forwarded 27015 (garrys mod) to my ipv4 address and checked to see if the port was open, it was still closed. so i tried to port forward from my modem, the only problem was that when i tried to add the local ip it didn't let me put in my ipv4 in which is (192.168.1.5). it only allowed 192.168.0.5. then i turned off my modems firewall, and the port was still closed. BTW i get my wifi from the router not the modem. but when i use router detector it detects 2 routers being my modem and my netgear. I don't know if that has anything to do with the port being blocked. also my router i'm pretty sure doesnt have a firewall to it. i even tried port forwarding from a different computer and it still didn't work. so, i need some help.
PS please keep this in laymans terms i have little to no knowledge of internet stuff
I need help with portforwarding
If you drop to command prompt and type: ipconfig ..you should get your computer's IP address, as well as the "Default Gateway" address, that is usually your router, the device you are connecting through. If you then type that gateway IP in your browser, you can usually get to it's admin interface.
It is common for many modern modems to also act as a router and DHCP server, giving away private IP addresses to clients. They do not usually block ports, and are rarely configurable, but it depends on your model. I would try to see the IP of your gateway and your own before configuring port forwarding to be sure. Also, a "closed" port may mean that there is no service/server listening to that port even if it is forwarded correctly.
