Good day everyone! I just need your inputs. I recently subscribed to a 16mbps cable broadband internet service provider in my area. Everything works great except that torrents and direct downloads from international websites are throttled to 60-100kb/s download. However, downloading through Steam, watching videos from YouTube and loading Facebook are very fast. I tried Speedtest from local servers and I get the full 1600-1900kb/s download speed. On the other hand, selecting any server outside my country gives me 60-200kb/s download speed only.
I did a little experiment and purchased a VPN. When I fired it up, I get full download speed from my Speedtest with foreign servers. Direct download with international servers are also faster. Torrents are consistently slow.
Any input guys in what could be causing this very inconsistent results?

"Fast" and "Slow" are very subjective quantities. It is very likely that your ISP doesn't have the capacity to serve fast speeds with international transfers, considering your location. When doing a speed test close to you, you are merely testing connections within your city/area, where they probably have much better connectivity.

Oh I see... Thank you for taking the time to reply. Anyway, if my ISP does not have the capacity to serve fast speeds, is there any explanation why using a VPN would give me better download speeds with international servers? When I say "better", it means I get the full speed that I am paying for. Without VPN, I get only around 1/8 of my subscribed speed.
If you connect to a VPN server that is local/near you, then you are using your ISP's bandwidth capacity to that one location. Assuming that your ISP is capable of serving fast speeds locally, that's all you need. From the VPN server to the other end of the connection, you would be limited by the VPN's capacity, you are using the VPN line.

Oh I see. Thank you Philip. I am from the Philippines and the VPN server is from France. I get really good download speed with that. Is there any other workaround (aside from using VPN) to get better download speed from international servers?
