ICSI Netalyzr - Uplink 530ms

Post by Frenkz »

Hello guys, I've been living lately with an annoying problem and I've been trying to figure it out by myself without any real success... I have 3 computers at home, two on Windows 8.1 one on 7. My laptop (Win8.1 on Wifi) shows no packet loss and no ms spikes, my other Desktop (Win7 Wired) shows no packet loss and no ms spikes. The third PC, is actually the only one I'm seeing the problem on, as I I'm playing CS:GO, I have annoying lag spikes. So I decided to run ping -t http://www.google.ca on that computer and that's when I figured out my computer was losing packets.

Also I am usually streaming (twitch.tv), I have no packet loss when streaming (Upload Wise) But when I go and try to Watch my Stream or any Stream, it keeps buffering over and over again.

This computer has Windows 8.1 installed and is supposed to be a great desktop... Anyways my internet connection is (Cable with DeryTelecom) 30mbps/5mbps and everything is running smooth on both other computers.

This is the main two problems I get on ICSI :

Network buffer measurements (?): Uplink 530 ms, Downlink 51 ms –

We estimate your uplink as having 530 ms of buffering. This level can in some situations prove somewhat high, and you may experience degraded performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large uploads. Real-time applications, such as games or audio chat, may also work poorly when conducting large uploads at the same time.

Direct probing of DNS resolvers (?) –

Your system is configured to use 1 DNS resolver(s).

The resolver at None is not responding to requests.

I wouldn't worry much about the Netalyzr buffering.. You can't affect it much with Windows 8.1 anyway.

As to the "packet loss" you saw - many routers give low priority to ICMP (ping) traffic, especially when congested, so they start dropping packets. OTOH, if the Netalyzr detected packet loss it's a different story, I believe it uses TCP packets.

Your problem could be related to network adapter configuration, or some local TCP/IP settings, cabling, etc. I'd run the optimal settings with the TCP Optimizer, and look at the network adapter properties - turn off any "TCP Offloads", "LSO - large send offload", etc. You can leave Checksum offloads on, there is a bit more detailed info on the main site here:

Network adapter optimization -> http://www.speedguide.net/articles/netw ... ation-3449
TCP/IP Gaming settings -> http://www.speedguide.net/articles/gaming-tweaks-5812

I hope this helps.
