2.4 or 5.0 Ghz aren't channels, they're bands.

You would need a wireless network card that is 5.0 Ghz....you have a 2.4 Ghz wireless NIC...so you're out of luck with that one.

I just upgraded to IE 11 and now when I open my router web page it tells me to update my browser to a newer version and that some of the features of the web page may not work. Nothing works! The page opens but non of the hot spots work, D-Link DIR 655. About 2 months ago I confirmed I had the latest firmware version.

Try a different browser....
Try updating firmware of the router, might be old router with old firmware that doesn't know how to handle new browsers.

looked it up at D Link site here's what I found

Please note that the DIR-655 is currently not compatible with Windows 8 operating system. The following are the system requirements for this device: Windows7, Vista, or XP with Service Pack 2, an installed Ethernet adapter, CD-ROM drive. Also the following are the Internet Browser requirements as well: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Chrome 2.0 or higher, Firefox 3.0 or higher and Safari 3.0 or higher. If you need additional information please visit http://www.dlink.com. Thank you for being a D-Link customer.
